How Did The North Use Tariffs Before The Civil War
The issue of the tariffs arose about 40 years before the start of the Civil War and was the main cause of the feeling of sectionalism, which made it harder for the states to agree and solve the other issues that came up before the start of the civil war. The North favored tariffs because the people in the North believed that if no tariffs were set, or if tariffs were set too low, they would be undersold by other countries and other manufacturers. The North wanted tariffs because they saw tariffs as a protection policy for its industry and its workers. The South was opposed to tariffs because the people of the South felt that tariffs placed on imported goods would hurt the trade relationships with other countries that they had built. The South

The Tariffs of this era are perhaps the most easily related to sectional differences. Tariffs had always been fought by the south. The south viewed tariffs as a way to tax the south because they would tax the south's imports and exports whereas little or nothing would be taxed in the north. This meant that there was an ongoing war in Congress of the sectional differences. The tariff of abominations was the boiling point for many southerners which resulted in South Carolina causing another…

As the north began to grow more industrially, the south stuck to their farms that were mainly maintained by slaves. This brought up a difficult dispute with the matter of how tariffs should be handled. Since the north became industrial, it was more efficient of them to impose tariffs on the country to better their economy. Instead of the people of the north getting better deals purchasing goods from Europe, the higher tariffs made it harder and cost them more to do business with Europe, as result they purchased goods from local businesses. This proved to be a major problem for the south because the high tariffs levels threatened their cotton exports and goods imports from their main buyers and sellers, the Europeans. This angered the south because the tariffs favored the North by protecting them from foreign competition such as with the Tariff of Abominations in 1828. The tariff forced the South to buy manufactured goods from U.S. manufacturers, mainly in the North, at a higher price, while southern states also faced a reduced income from sales of raw materials. But then the tariff of 1832 was addressed by Andrew Jackson to further lower the tariffs, but the south was still. The coexistence…

The Civil War which lasted from 1861 to 1877 was mainly caused by the diverging society between the North and the South. The North and the South had different goals. There were many factors that led to the war and the chief ones were political and economic differences between the North and the South. The North's aggression to control the South had led to the point where it was intolerable. The issue on slavery was one of the cause of the Civil War. Slavery and slave trades had become a big part of the South's economy. The slaves were needed to work on plantations which helped the South prospered. During the 19th Century, the North worked hard on abolishing slavery which they thought was an disgrace to the Union. Compromises were proposed working toward an end to slavery. One of the compromises was the Missouri Compromise which made Maine, a free state, and Missouri, a slave state, excluded slavery from Louisiana Territory and everything above the 36?30?north latitude. Other compromises such as the Compromise of 1850 did pleased both sides. The Compromise included admitting California as a free state and interstate slave trade to be abolished which went in favour of the North. The Compromise also went with the South when it included stricter fugitive slave laws and New Mexico and Utah were created without slave restrictions. A book called, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was also published at this time emphasising the evils of slavery. This added tension between the North and the South. The compromises seemed to have settled the issue of slavery but it was just putting back the problem. The North and the South were far from settling the slave issue. Another reason that caused the South to go to war was the difference in economic policies. The North was expanding more in the commercial and industrial side while the South was reliant on agriculture. Cities and factories had developed in the North and in the South, it was still staple-producing and agrarian. The North's industry…

“The North had an industrial economy based on manufacturing. They supported tariffs because they wanted american goods to be sold at lower prices than British goods could. The South was an agrarian economy based on agriculture, meaning that they supplied themselves by growing their own food. The South opposed the tariffs because it would destroy their economy because it would increase the cost of imported goods. The West was an emerging economy and supported the internal improvements and the sale of public lands. When Jackson’s vice president John C. Calhoun supported the criteria needed for a strong central government but didn’t support the tariffs of abominations. In response to the tariffs of abomination, he created the South Carolina Expositions and Protest. Then protest advanced to the states’ rights doctrine. He argued that, because the states had formed the national government, state power should be greater than federal power. He believed states had the right to nullify, or reject, any federal law they judged to be unconstitutional”(Deverell, William and Deborah Gray White). This would help in the future because it would allow states to be more…

When the United States went to war in 1812, Americans were stopped from importing factory goods from Great Britain (their wartime enemy). Without competition from foreign nations, northern industries made a handsome profit. During peacetime, the congress tried to maintain the good times for the new northern industries by raising tariffs (taxes) rates from 1816-1828. But the effect of this tariffs wasn 't so good for south, the tariff made manufactured goods more expensive, the tariff also reduced the market for British-made cotton cloth, which meant that the south would sell less raw cotton to their major costumer, Great Britain. When even higher tariffs were passed the south revolted. Violent conflict was avoided, but further increased the sectionalism of the nation.…

The South, being primarily agricultural, opposed tariffs, because they were unable to manufacture the goods they needed and had to import them from Europe or buy them from the North. In the view of the South, tariffs made everything more expensive, and thought that there was unequal distribution of the money derived from the imposition of the tariff. The North, obviously, had a different view on tariffs and favored them. They believed it protected domestic industries from unfair foreign competition and they didn’t have to lower prices on goods to compete with them. At the end of the day, tariffs looked like the North was taxing the South, and this deepened the divide between the two sections, and caused the South to start making plans for…

They depended greatly on the North for their industries and factories, because they had very few. They also opposed federal spending on internal improvements and they wanted no tariffs. Even despite having a somewhat weak economy, the South wanted to gain their independence to become their own country, and to have their own way of life, which included slavery as legal. When Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860, the South thought that they would have no voice in the government, considering that Abraham Lincoln was against slavery. In hopes of being their own country, the South had no intention of fighting a war. However, before the war started, the South was unwilling to compromise. They thought that slavery should be allowed in all of the territories. They disagreed to the Missouri Compromise and to parts of the Compromise of 1850. Many felt that these compromises were unfair and biased. The South felt that their way of life and views on slavery were right and just. They turned to what they thought was their only choice: seceding from the Union. This enrage the North, which was one of the main causes of the Civil War.…

The North and South had opposing economic systems, which added to their rising enmity. The North was rapidly industrializing, with a thriving manufacturing sector and an expanding population. In contrast, the South remained rural, depending on plantation agriculture and slave labor. Economic policies, such as protective tariffs that favored Northern industry, created dissatisfaction in the South, which relied significantly on agricultural exports and was opposed to measures that could undermine it. The economic disparity between the two regions fueled distrust and exacerbated pre-existing tensions, making compromise increasingly difficult.…
