How Did The Renaissance Affect Society
The Renaissance was a period following the Middle Ages where there was a rebirth of art and learning. The Renaissance started around 1350 and lasted till 1600. The Renaissance initially started in Italy. Individuals in Italy wanted to revive the culture of classical Greece and Rome. Through this process new things were created and accomplished. The Renaissance caused changes in arts and society. Drawings, paintings, and sculptures focused more on the individual and it was portrayed in a realistic way. Writers used vernacular language, native language, rather than latin to share their ideas. Due to the printing press, more books were printed which increased the desire for learning. The Renaissance began in Italy for three main reasons: thriving
cities, a wealthy merchant class, and the classical heritage of Greece and Rome. Thriving cities and a wealthy merchant class can be credited to the geography of Italy. Italy is located on the Mediterranean sea which offered it many advantages. During the Italian Renaissance many new ideas arose. Due to the analyzation of classical texts, a movement that focused on humans and individuals called humanism arose. Italian Renaissance introduced new styles to art such as perspective. By using this technique, painters were able to show three dimension. Italian Renaissance writers focused on writing about self-expression or focusing on an individual. A constant theme throughout the Renaissance was the importance of the individual. During the 1400’s, Italian Renaissance ideas began to spread north. As Northern Europe recovered from the bubonic plague, wealthy merchants began to sponsor artists. The Northern Renaissance had unique features; for example, artists were interested in realism. A French king invaded northern Italy and as a result Italian artists and writers traveled to Northern Europe. Through their journey they spread many Italian Renaissance ideas. Furthermore, Johann Gutenberg invented a printing press that helped to spread Renaissance ideas.Upon receiving the Italian humanist ideas, people in the north used them to study the teachings of the church.
