The British have tricked the Americans enough into thinking that they are being good to them and aren’t treating them as slaves. The British deceive the people of America and truly do things for their own good and not theirs. They send armies to keep them from rebelling and keep them under control or else they will kill them. Speeches point out how they might as well be slaves because they have no freedom because they are being held down. The people in America try to communicate with Britain, but they push them aside and leave them to suffer. When Henry says “I wish to know what there has been in the conduct of the British ministry for the last ten years, to justify those hopes with which gentlemen have been pleased to solace themselves and the House?” he is questioning them and making people think is it really worth being loyal to them. Another point that people used in speeches to further persuade people was religion. Religion was a huge ordeal in the early years and many fights or wars were caused by people’s different beliefs.
The British did not give people much of a choice of religion so God was their ultimate judgement and that’s what people made a point on in their speeches. In the “Give me Liberty or Death” speech Henry makes a point to say that God is their only ruler and how he will be by their side during the fight. In the end god will make the judge who is right or wrong and decide who will win. As when said “Besides, sir, we shall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations, and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us.” .In the End he also says “Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!” signifying the beginning of a
war. These speeches inspired many people to go to war with Britain for the Freedom of America. They appealed to people in different ways to make them think about them, their futures, and their country. The war lasted many years and was worth it because America obtained their freedom from the British. The speeches were a major key point and the war may have never even happened without them.
