“Late in the afternoon of June 28, 1940, six Heinkel bombers attacked the island and many islanders were killed in the raids.” This was the start of the occupation of the Channel Islands and many years of hardship for the islanders. First, the Germans kept track of how many livestock each islander had. The islanders were not allowed to kill and eat the livestock. In Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society on page 76, it tells how the islanders were able to keep livestock without the Germans knowing. Will Thisbee had a pig that died, after the AO gave him a death certificate he ran through the woods and gave the carcass to Amelia. Amelia hid her healthy pig and called the AO saying, “Come quick, my pig has died,” then she got a death certificate and brought it to another neighbor. They continued this until the pig carcass rotted. Second, many islanders had to give up their fishing boats because some tried to escape from the Germans in their fishing boats. Many were able to reach family living in Europe, others drowned, so the Germans made everyone who had family living in England give up their fishing boat.
