How Did The Us Contain Communism
In the year 1947 is what is known as the beginning of the Cold War. During World War II the countries of United States and Soviet Union combined forces to defeat the Germans. When the war was over the tension of different ideologies began once again. Joseph Stalin the leader of the Soviet Union wanted to expand communism, he believed that communism was the superior ideology. The United States being capitalist contain communism by using the Berlin blockade and airlift to their advantage, the Korean war, and The Cuban missile crises.
The Berlin Blockade,was one demonstration of how the United States was containing communism, a good example of how the United States was containing communism is when they would send flights to drop supplies to the
west of Germany to help the citizens living in the area. When Germany was separated by the four major powers, the Soviet Union being the only communist government decided to blockade any trade coming into west Berlin. By doing this Joseph Stalin was influencing communist ideals into the citizens in west Berlin. The United States responded with immediate action by supplying everything from food to coal to the citizens of west berlin.(Document B) This provided hope and made the citizen want to deny the communist form of government within the society. This would eventually lead for the desire of a capitalist form of government.The United states would have contained the communist form of government by giving the capitalist form of government a more heroic appeal to the citizens of west Berlin and giving the communist government an antagonist aspect.
A second example of containment was the Korean War. With support of the Soviet Union North Korea attacked South Korea without warning. When the United States learned about what South Korea had done they sent troops to help South Korea. The United States supported South Korea with the assistance of the United Nations, together they pledged to defend the democracy of South Korea (Document C). The war was an attempt to enforce communist ideologies to the Southern Korean citizens. The United States was able to contain the communist ideals by using military force.
A third example of containment was the Cuban Missile Crisis. Under Fidel Castro Cuba became the closest communist country to the United States. When United States found out that the Soviet Union was shiping missiles to cuba. The United States in response announced a quarantine against ships carrying offensive weapons to cuba. The quarantine was an attempt to contain communism (Document D).
Although there were other times during the Cold War that the United States attempted to contain communism like the Berlin Blockade, South Korea, three examples are very clear. They would try to influence the capitalist ideals to citizens by portraying them-self as a heroic figure. The United States did indeed use military force to contain communism as well as quarantine ships. Today it is important to understand the tension between the communist ideals and the capitalist ideals to beter understand the would around us.
