The bonus was promised to the veterans years earlier. But by this time veterans were frustrated at the fact that they still had not received compensation for their services. Much needed by many to help support their families and get them off the streets. The government failed to produce the bonus, they told the veterans they would receive their bonus in a few years. Many of the veterans knew they may not live long enough to receive the bonus.This angered the veterans, which caused them to come to the conclusion they were not leaving until they received their bonuses. President Hoover locked himself in The Capitol building when The General started to run off the veterans. When The General took over is was very chaotic. The General and his troops reacted violently by burning down the veterans makeshift houses. During this violent rage The General used tear gas, which ran many veterans off. Tragically the use of the tear gas left two veterans and infant dead and also blinded an 8-year-old. While sending The General and his troops after the WWI veterans might of seemed like a good idea to President Hoover at the time, he did not expect the attack to leave three innocent people dead and one innocent child
