Pimlico
In 1874, Wood has a number of addresses around the Pimlico end of Victoria Street. He is entered in Westminster Rate Books for 3 Westminster Pier, Cannon Row, possibly to do with the wharf system and slum clearance there, but now absorbed into the newly built Victoria Embankment. He may have looked into compensation for property demolished. He is given in the electoral roles for 1873 and 1875 with an address (presumably for another property) in up market Bessborough St, Pimlico. Later in 1880, a working address is given as Westminster Chambers, Victoria Street.

In the courtroom the accused stood at “the bar” which was directly facing the witness box and the judge was seated at the other side of the room. In, 1666 the medieval courthouse was destroyed in the Great Fire of London and it was not until 1673 when it was rebuilt as a three-story Italianate brick building.…

#1 I found that I had mixed feelings as to if the Reconstruction was a splendid failure or not so I did some research. The Reconstruction is surrounded by controversy. Eric Froner asserts that the Reconstruction did not achieve the radical goals that were hoped for but the Reconstruction did offer African Americans in the south a vison of a free society even if only temporarily. Historians have categorized the Reconstruction as a total failure and that failure proved to be detrimental to both blacks and whites. Both Northern and Southern historians wrote about the Reconstruction and were fascinated by it for two reasons, the first being that they believed that the south was…

Poverty and homelessness remains a main concern in our society. Patrick Conway, of the Global Research Institute of the University of North Carolina conducted research on “Poverty of North Carolina.” The research illustrated that the national poverty rate was 14.5 % in the year of 2009, way below the North Carolina poverty rate. Poverty is still a rising and an ongoing crisis. According to a data set found in usda.gov for North Carolina in 2010, the poverty rate was between 16.9 to 22.4 %. Using the text, Nickel and Dimed by Ehrenreich, and other writing sources, students were presented with a scenario of living in poverty. In this hypothetical situation, the student is 21 years old, pregnant with a seven month old baby and has a one year old. In addition, the spouse is disabled and unemployed. In this…

“We live today in a flood of manipulated appeals.” (Beyle, 106) We are surrounded by propaganda and other means of communication and persuasion. The term ‘propaganda’ is itself the meaning of the quality of information that is transmitted and received in the twentieth century. (Cunningham, 3) The Word “propaganda” means to spread or promote particular ideas. In Latin, it means “to propagate”. (Wave, 1) Propaganda is a type of persuasive communication, just like advertising, education and political campaigning. But propaganda is different from the rest in source, purpose, and target. (Martin, 61) Propaganda’s purpose is to convince a specific targeted group of people to act, or think in a specific way. “Persuasive communication only works to the extent that it obtains what it was meant to obtain.” (Martin, 61) The propagandist then has to foreshadow what will be the public’s reaction to its propaganda, and although there is some research on propaganda, there is no certainty that its propaganda will have the effect the creator of the piece wants. (Scoble, 61) some types of propaganda are carried on by organizations like the Anti-Cigarette League, which have a definite and restricted objective; others are conducted by organizations, like most civic associations, which have a rather general and diffused purpose. (Laswell, 629) Some organizations rely almost only upon propaganda; others use it as a mean of social control. (Laswell, 629) “All communication is purposive by definition, but not all communication…
