The interesting aspect is, while Obama was trying to “help,” in reference to Wilson’s speech Obama created groups, “You cannot become thorough Americans if you think of yourselves in groups. America does not consist of groups. A man who thinks of himself as belonging to a particular national group in America has not yet become an American.” (Wilson) In Wilson’s speech he claims that by having groups we are no longer united as we are placing our identities in the home that we left instead of in the place we want to go. “It is one thing to love the place were you were born and it is another thing to dediate yourself to the place to which you go.” (Wilson) While known for acceptance, are we truly accepting by placing one group above another with these programs? Are they truly assimilating to becoming thorough Americans? Trump has now taken on the obligation of disbanding these programs and once again uniting the United States as Wilson saw fit. “It was but an historical accident no doubt that this great country was called the “United States”; yet I am very thankful that it has that word “United” in the title, and the man who seeks to divide man from man, group from group, interest from interest in this great Union is striking at its very heart.” (Wilson) Obama was interested in giving and accommodating to all while President Trump is stating that we need to try and make this land great again by going back to our roots.
