Imperialism is an arrangement of a country’s power being expanded by the impact of diplomatic and military means. The Europeans and British wanted to take over other countries/colonies and imperialized for new natural resources, new markets, and the belief in European superiority. The first reason the imperialized is because they would get the new natural resources of that land such as copper, tin, gold, and diamonds. They were in control of or owned those resources. Another reason the British imperialized was because of the new markets they could sell to, which helped them gain more customers, since they ran the government they got to determine where people buy things from. Throughout history, countless countries have wanted to be on top. Whether culturally superior, or monetarily superior, or even having an extensive empire, every country wants most or all of these in their arsenal of advantages. Countries who strive to be the cream of the crop tend to turn towards imperialism. Imperialism, being the domination of cultural, economic, or political life of another country, is a very attractive course to take for the forming imperialist power. While some may argue that the controlling power could aid the development and prosperity of both the controlled country and itself, it may, in some cases, be detrimental to the controlled country. Many European powers and Japan during the late 1800s to the early 1900s became imperialistic nations to seize control of developing African Nations, India, and Asian countries and territories, and not all of these nations were agreeable about foreign control.…

Although the purpose of alliances was to balance out power and bring peace, all nations desired the strongest military and biggest advances in technology. This ambition to want to become the greatest power in Europe was what caused alliances to be less effective. Since there could only be one country at the top, all nations fought for that position, even allies. Furthermore, imperialism happened years before but the spirit still remained in the people, European countries wanted all the land they could possibly get.…

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, both France’s and Germany’s armies had nearly doubled in size due to militarism. Germany was in competition with France to obtain Europe’s—some might even argue the world’s—largest army. Keeping a strong army was important to Germany because it helped to demonstrate to the rest of the world that they were a rising power. It also helped show other countries—who once wrote Germany off—that if they dared challenge them, they would pay dearly.…

A very prominent form of power at the time was to rule smaller countries, and therefore European powers invaded territories and made those their colonies. [ Dave Herron, 'Causes Of WW1'] That became a competition when the colonies turned out to be very profitable due to the fact they offered cheap labour and an abundance of raw materials they couldn’t find in their own country. Thus, nations that were able to gather many colonies, had these extra strengths and caused other countries to wish for the same. European nations then started competing with each other for which could gather more colonies, and that became known as imperialism.…

Countries throughout Europe made defense agreements that would pull them into battle meaning, it one country was attacked, allied countries were bound to defend them. This was called alliances. At the start of World War One, Germany and Austria-Hungary allied and became became the Triple Alliance or Central Powers Alliance, when Italy joined in 1882. Fearful of that alliance; in 1894, France made an alliance with Russia, and in 1904 France also made an agreement with Britain. It was called the Entente: not a formal alliance, but a promise to work together. In 1907, Britain made an entente with Russia, forming the triple entente which included France, Russia, and Britain.
