How do we know what we know? We know a lot of things, but have we ever asked ourselves: “How do we know what we know?” As an example let’s take a student. A student gets knowledge from the teachers in the school. But why that student unreservedly listens in what does teacher say? The main reason is that a student believes, that his teacher teach him only truth. And if you make so that teacher tells incorrect information, a student will just remember it and will not try to find any mistakes in that kind of information. Because of that, people must know how information that they were provided is reliable and if it is true, then it may be knowledge. Another aspect lays in the fact what kind of knowledge we are using when we are getting it. We know what we know by using personal knowledge or shared knowledge. Let me first explain you what do they mean. Personal knowledge – is the kind of knowledge that involves experience. As an example I want to take myself. When I was little kid, I was always angry when my aunt (she was a teenager in those times) started to complain about her studies. She told that it was very hard to study in college, that she almost did not have any free time, that she did not getting enough sleep and etc. I thought that it is nonsense. I thought that all teenagers are cool ones and they have lots of free time for entertainment. But now I want to take my words back, because I have already realized that she was telling truths. That it becomes harder to study every year. This is called personal knowledge. Shared knowledge differs from personal knowledge. As an example let’s take some scientist in biology. Let’s imagine that he found something that people have not known until now, for example: structure of the DNA. Now it is his personal knowledge. But, if he proves that discovery to the other scientists, that knowledge will become shared knowledge. Because he shared that knowledge that was his own, so personal
