When you love someone very much they become apart of you and if you lose that part of you it seems that something is always missing in your life without them there. Your identity is made up of the people you surround yourself with do when you lose someone that makes up your identity, there is a missing link your life. One night when Richard was eighteen he saw the love of his life disappear into a coma for an unknown reason. This left him empty questioning so much about his life, wondering how he could continue to live without. In order to live on, Richard seeks a role as an extra on TV productions acting as his temporary identity, helping to block out what is really going on in his life. Ever since Karen has been in a coma he doesn’t see much to live for, he says “Destiny is what we work toward. The future doesn't exist yet. Fate is for losers” pg 80. He sees his destiny as what’s met to happen for him and isn’t worried about the future because it’s unknown. He is living in the moment as he is unsure what to do without his life currently because Karen isn’t there. He’s working to forget his own problems by masking them with something else, like his job as a TV extra. One’s identity can be diminished as a result of many different factors such as society, this can stop us from developing ourselves any further. When our identity is lost we seek a void to fill the emptiness helping us to rediscover ourselves. In the novel Girlfriend in a Coma by Douglas Coupland, society and technology cause the characters to lose their identity and search for the missing link to fulfill the void in their lives. Hamilton uses the high of drugs to block out the realities of the modern world. Richard uses a temporary identity of a TV extra to help him get over the missing link in his life, which is Karen. Karen wakes up from a coma seventeen years later only to realize that her friends humanity has been diminished as a result of technology. Identity is who we are and we should never allow that to change because of the way society is/wants us to be, we should be who we want to be, as it can have loss of consequences if we loss
