“I am a black woman, and this is how society views me…..” words from a very intellectual woman on campus named Imazdi Davis, and Davis is right. Society views her physically, not intelligently. Society sees that physical differences between male and female, but not notice that her IQ is not the same number as her waist size, or that “she” is capable in anything and everything that “he” is capable of professionally. With this part of my Glass Ceiling series I wanted to speak on the topic of women in business. This “ceiling” varies by the type of job a woman is performing. In the corporate or organizational setting it could be that assumptions are made about a woman’s ability to handle difficult negotiations, leading the entity. Our next President will most likely be a woman, and more and more women are holding the posts of CEO, President, and Executive Director at Fortune 500 businesses and large organizations. I would encourage young women to seek out mentors. If there is a woman in your community, church or place of employment that you admire or inspires you, introduce yourself and forge a relationship with her to learn more about her journey. Some “mentors” are from a distance, I have many “mentors” that have no idea they influence my life, but I take note of their accomplishments, and their failures and how they have dealt with both as each comes with
