Implementing Strategies: Management and Operations Issues Chapter 7

Abstract
39. Discuss the glass ceiling in the United States, giving your ideas and suggestions.
“The glass ceiling” is a concept that betrays America’s most cherished principles. I can describe it as the unseen, yet unreachable barrier that keeps minorities and women from rising to the upper rungs of the corporate ladder, regardless if their qualifications or achievements.

The glass ceiling effect describes the invisible differences in appraisal, salary and position between men and women. Racism may also be seen in the myths that certain races may be better or worse in certain abilities. Because of a lack of familiarity with other races, people are more likely to unconsciously discriminate against others (Sherman, 2000). Racism has had serious damaging effects on the United States culture and society. These effects are expressed through language, ideas, schools, language policies, economic stratification social segregation, housing markets, hiring and promotional schemas, minority members’ psychological issues and minority access to a variety of social services and opportunities. Racism is prevalent in American society and remains a silent code that systematically closes the doors of opportunity to young and old individuals. Visibly identifiable members of racial and ethnic oppressed groups continue to struggle for equal access and opportunity, particularly during times of harsh economics, dwindling natural resources, inflation, widespread unemployment and underemployment, and conservative judicial opinions that are precursors to greater deprivation. Unless curbed, these conditions invariably lead to greater ethnic and…

Within the last three decades, the increasing diversity of the workforce has been one of the most important management issues to emerge. Diversity is the differences among people in age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, and capabilities/disabilities. There is a strong ethical guideline around the world that diverse people must receive equal opportunities and be treated fairly and justly. Unfair treatment is also illegal. Glass ceiling is a metaphor alluding to the invisible barriers that prevent minorities and women from being promoted to top corporate positions. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 prohibits age discrimination against workers over the age of 40 and restricts mandatory…

The discrimination-and-fairness paradigm operates on the assumption that “we are all the same” or “we aspire to being all the same” (Thomas & Ely, 1996, p. 81). Companies that use this paradigm focus on the numbers, or how well they achieve a minority “recruitment” level. They may even have programs to mentor and help minorities further advance their careers and train other employees…

This being the case people have been fighting their way into the country for decades. However, it is becoming more and more of a problem each decade that passes. With the United States border being so close to Mexico it is now seeing the highest population of illegal immigrants to date. The rising population is due to the lack of jobs in their country, poor pay and bad work environments. Many white people truly don’t realize how much we are privileged today. We are constantly being reminded that if we set our minds to things we can achieve anything, but is that true for all races and ethnic groups? For whites it is easily possible to do and become anything we want but not so easy for other minority groups like Arabs, blacks, Hispanics, and Latinos. The University of Michigan was brought up in the article because its points system was extremely white privileged. White privilege means that whites get better benefits or immunities granted to them just because they are white. Our society still has somewhat of a glass ceiling when it comes to minority groups. Let’s be honest there are far more whites in power, politics, and many other things than minority group people are. That tells me that there is a glass ceiling because there still is a barrier that’s blocking minorities from promotion in America. Many things can relate to this article like, white privilege, a glass ceiling, racism, discrimination, prejudice, and stereotypes…

The first step in reversing economic inequality is by reversing racial inequality. One short-time solution in reversing racial inequality would be to make pay equal for the same job no matter a person’s race or gender. In this case, racial inequality produces a direct economic effect. Providing equal pay is just one way to help level the economic field between racial groups. In addition, companies must not only be compliant with work place discrimination laws, but make it a top priority by having a system that actively audits its efforts. I also argue that affirmative action must still be implemented to give opportunities to those who would not otherwise been given the chance for entry to a field or for…
