It seems that Austin was very determined to not end up like his family, and so he tried his best to escape the impact of them but that still did not work. He tried to get his own sense of being in becoming his own person and that’s where all his working ethics came from, but in the end, it all did not matter. Austin still ended down the same road that both his brother and father ended up taking. One scene in particular that shows the deep rooted issues between his family happens in scene four. Austin’s brother Lee takes his car keys and says “What kinda people kill each other most Family, people, brothers. “ (Shepard, 1980). During this scene, the two get into a heated argument. Lee challenges his brother to call the police on him so that they can remove him from the house after he does not return his keys Austin does not does not even contemplate calling the police because this is still his little brother, but I do not think that Lee thinks the same way. Lee to me feels like even though he is brother he cannot get in trouble with the law because it’s family matters that they are dealing with. These feelings that Austin has of trying to forget his family may be in his mind, but deep down he cares for them as we have just seen in that scene. He tried his best so hard to reject who his family was but in the end his family caught up to
