Disease Control, 2015). Bullying can break a person down emotionally. According to the Center for Disease Control the students who do happen to experience bullying are tend to have bad grades during the time that they are being bullied due to depression, sleep difficulties and anxiety.
Bullying and Suicide
According to the data from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suicide is the 3rd leading death cause among teens. With that being said, there is a very strong connection between bullying and suicide. Suicide related to bullying can be associated with traditional bullying and cyberbullying. “Bully victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, according to studies by Yale University” (bullyingstatistics.org). This statistic alone lets us know that bullying is a huge problem in today’s society. Many victims to bullying believe that their way to escape all of the pain, insults, and terror is by taking their own life away. As a result there is so much pain and suffering that affects families, friends and other individuals when a bullied victim commits suicide. There are many signs and warnings to look out for someone who may be considering suicide:
• Withdrawing from friends, family and society (stompoutbullying.org)
• Talking about or showing interest in death or dying(bullyingstatistics.org)
• Giving away favorite possessions and saying goodbye to people (bullyingstatistics.org)
• Experiencing dramatic mood changes (stompoutbullying.org)
• Increasing Alcohol or other drug use (stompoutbullying.org)
Bullying and School Shootings
For plenty of time now anti-bullying groups have always tried to prove the connection between bullying and school shootings.
Due to the rare situations it is always hard to find out if bullying actually causes school shootings or does it have to do with the victim having some type of mental and psychological issues. Although according to pacer.org “One study shows that 60 percent of students with disabilities report being bullied regularly compared with 25 percent of all students.” With that being said it is safe to say that bullying could be the root problem for those victims. Furthermore bullying is also linked to school shootings. After being bullied and harassed some student victims believe that the only way to end bullying is to bringing some sort of weapon with them in order to protect themselves. “A new study based on a survey of more than 15,000 American high school students found that victims of bullying are nearly twice as likely to carry guns and other weapons at school.” Stated by the Centers for Disease Control’s survey. As a result of bullying these statistic numbers are too high and need to be stopped. There is no reason that any student should not feel safe while they are trying to get an …show more content…

My story
When I was younger just starting middle school at a new school, I was desperate to make new friends. The first group of friends that I began to hang around turned out to be bullies. I remember the first test that I had in my math class, I didn’t know the answers. My former friend Gerald looked at me and realized that I was struggling with the test, so he told me to get the answer from the boy sitting in from of me named Mike. When I first asked Mike for help on the test he refused to help me. When I turned around I realized Gerald was looking at me, he told “you better tell him to give you the answers before you beat his ass”. Desperate for the answers on the test I did exactly what he told me to do and surely enough Mike gave me the answers. Looking back on that moment throughout high school and even now I felt bad about what happened. Ever since then I have always been one to stand up for other people whose voice is not loud enough to be heard, I refuse to be a bystander. Furthermore a bystander is a person who witness somethings bad happening and refuses to take action.
Bystanders are also those people who stand behind and record the bad thing that is going on. To help put an end to bullying these bystanders need to stand up and help out fellow students who are being bullied. Another way to prevent bullying is to have positive behavior interventions and support groups. According to the Illinois PBIS Network “Thus schools currently implementing PBIS with fidelity are likely to experience a decrease in behaviors associated with bullying as an effect of their school-wide PBIS efforts.” Meaning that schools that use the Illinois PBIS Network have lower bullying rates. This is just from one program in Illinois, and I believe that there are plenty more. I believe schools should hire programs like these in order to help prevent bullying at their school, and if the program is not in the schools budget then they should offer volunteer or up stander clubs at their
schools.
