“Do you believe in God?” Imagine being asked this question, and your response was what determined whether or not you would be shot to death. This is what happened at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado on April 20th, 1999 (“Columbine High School Shootings”). This terrible tragedy affected many people, including the entire nation. After this happened, many schools took their security precautions into consideration. The school district I have grown up in, Rochester Community Schools, did as well. Rochester Community Schools, along with other schools across the country, began to practice lockdown drills. People are doing whatever they can to prevent them, through lockdown drills and security personnel. The big question is what is the cause of these shootings? A big factor in school shootings are mental illnesses. Most people who have committed a school shooting were proven to be mentally ill. For example, Adam Lanza, the shooter of Sandy Hook was mentally ill (Vartabedian). Many people will jump to the conclusion that all school shooters are “mentally ill” or have a mental sickness. For anyone to be able to walk into a school and pull a trigger, there obviously isn’t something right in their mind. Surprisingly, however, not all school shooters are mentally sick. Along with mental illnesses, easy access to guns plays a big role in the cause of these horrific shootings. A lot of illegal gun sales are taking place and teens are able to access a gun pretty easily (“Causes of School Violence”). People with gun licences will purchase a gun and then sell it to someone who doesn’t have a license. Aside from these two factors, there are other circumstances that can cause gun violence in schools. There are many causes of school violence. There are many ways to stop it, but the best way to help prevent them, is by having better communication between staff, students and parents pertaining anything to do with behavior that can cause a school
