Gun Control on College Campuses
Gun control has been a highly controversial issue in the United States for the past several decades. From assassinations to mass shootings, every time guns and violence comes together the issue resurfaces. Should the nation act on stricter gun control laws and regulations? Can people be trusted to own a gun, that they will use it responsibly? Most recently, in Tennessee, Governor Bill Haslam allowed a bill to become law, called SB 2376, that now allows full-time faculty at Tennessee's public state universities and colleges to carry handguns on campus. When the topic of discussion about if gun would be allowed, “The bill that the Republican governor allowed to become law had little opposition in both houses, easily passing 69-24 in the House and 28-5 in the Senate last month. The law will go into effect on July 1.” (Ghianni). The bill that now allows guns on campuses comes with many rules too. Students aren’t allowed to carry guns. Only full-time faculty are permitted to carry the weapon. This excludes any tutors or any part time teachers or workers at the school. This makes the right to carry a gun very exclusive. For the full-time faculty members, the law restricts them to bring their gun into gyms, stadiums, and hospitals. This keeps the weapons away from the areas that need to be kept safe. Places like gyms, stadiums, and hospitals are areas where safety can be handled by the appropriate security and not a teacher. Also for teachers to be able to exercise their right, "anyone carrying a gun under the new law must have a permit and notify local police or campus security, whichever has responsibility for law enforcement on campus.” (Ghianni).
