on at college. College students are young, wild, and free. One of the most common reasons college students break up is cheating. This, combined with concealed carry would result in disaster. Sure, one may argue that this could also be helpful in the way of self-defense. This is a solid argument on the surface, but even a toe in this logic will reveal flaws. Firstly, predators usually prey on anxious and shy people, the kind of people least likely to defend themselves. Another point is that if both attacker and victim have guns, then there is a gun fight on campus. Thirdly, this could result in people getting caught in the crossfire of others. Another worry would be an increase in school shootings. A pistol can hold around twenty to thirty bullets. That many deaths would count as a mass shooting. Say that all of those bullets hit their marks, and the shooter could take out an entire small class. There are plenty of people just looking for a reason to get their five minutes of fame, and a mass shooting would be a quick ride to the top. Of course, one could argue that there are not that many college students looking to shoot up their school at the drop of a pen, and he or she would be correct. Maybe there are only two or three students that would take the opportunity with concealed carry, but One has to look at the math and ask, “Is it worth it?” The answer is no. Three students with even only twenty bullets could kill sixty people, and that is still not okay. Robbery and assault are also two large risks.
With a gun at their head, most people would do whatever they needed to do to save themselves. Robbing people on the sidewalk would be exponentially easier, especially since the gun the attacker would use would be legal to carry away. Assault rates would almost definitely skyrocket. With the already easy dorm access, the presence of concealed guns would only make the atmosphere more threatening. Currently, girls leave their doors cracked and are comfortable walking downstairs by themselves. This would all change with the threat that a gunman could pay a visit any second. This applies to the boys dorms, also. Nobody would feel safe with the threat of assault any second. A gun-free campus is a safer campus. With the threat of any passerby being able to whip out a gun at any moment, no student would feel safe. The risk of crimes of passion, mass shootings, assault, and robbery would combine for an apocalyptic atmosphere. Students would have severe troubles making their dorm their homes with the looming cloud of possible death following them around at all times. There are just so many reasons that guns should not be allowed on a university campus that a counter argument would surely resemble a strainer in the amount of holes in its
logic.
