middle and elementary campuses. A handful of these incidents ended before a mass number of people were hurt; however, not one of these schools had protection to defend quickly. Recently, many counties have hired police for high school and college facilities; but more often than not, one officer does not have the time, speed, nor reinforcement to stop a danger from occurring when in different locations. As a means for the future, the crime risk needs to be lowered. Is the United States going to sit back and take the killing of its own people, or will the country make a change? Patrik Jonsson wrote an editorial for the newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor, which told a summary about a 2014 shooting and how to protect next time. The situation occurred at Florida State University on the twentieth of November, an important day for students… finals. The perpetrator, Myron May, shot three victims in the Strozier Library then fired at police officials. After the incident, a blogger concluded, “We shall see what we shall see, but the place where people are most desperately in need of a defensive weapon are those places where self-defense is forbidden.” In this case, self-defense was forbidden which is why three people were injured. A National Review article written by John R. Lott Jr. concludes all the hidden information behind gun-free zones. According to Lott, almost all American mass shootings have occurred in gun-free zones, and every Europe mass shooting has occurred in a gun-free zone. The Review gives three examples of current criminals who admitted to backing out of one place and going for another because of security. The criminals are the following: Dylann Roof, fired within a South Carolina church; James Holmes, Dark Knight movie-theater killer; and Elliot Rodger, shooter in Santa Barbara, California. Dylann Roof admitted to planning on attacking the College of Charleston, South Carolina; however, he changed motives once he knew armed guards were protecting. James Holmes picked seven theaters within twenty minutes of him but chose the only one that banned all concealed handguns. Elliot Rodger explained his pick of place in a manifesto by concluding his fear of the killing spree being stopped too soon. The author of the article and a man from the University of Chicago, Bill Landers, studied the incidents within a period of time and concluded the impact on mass casualties was the right to conceal and carry. He writes, “Right-to-carry laws reduced both the frequency and the severity of mass public shootings; and to the extent to which mass shootings still occurred, they took place in those tiny areas in the states where permitted concealed handguns were not allowed.” As the National Review summarized, gun-free zones are mostly likely targeted, because the fear perpetrators have towards potential security. The first ever campus mass shooting was at the University of Texas on August 1, 1966. A sniper, Charles Whitman, killed sixteen people from the school’s clock tower. Fifty years later, on August 1, 2016, a bill went into effect for the state to allow conceal and carry on campus. Texas republican governor, Greg Abbott signed the bill in attempts to control the killing sprees by having access to protection when needed. State Representative Jonathan Strickland comments, “An armed society is a safe society, so any time you have gun control, there is far more opportunity to become victims.” By this statement, Strickland is suggesting gun control is the leading cause to mass shootings because people have no right to protect themselves which is why Texas changed that. The Huffington Post author and expert, Steve Siebold, wrote an article on the blog about a school in Arkansas who armed a handful of staff with firearms. Arkansas Christian Academy, in the town of Bryant, Arkansas, was one of the first schools to make an attempt for the better. Siebold writes, “The only solution is self-responsibility: arm school officials and give them a fighting chance. No gunman is going to target a school that can defend itself and fight back.” As proven, criminals are looking for a place to succeed without being stopped before an act is finished. He concludes his article by stating, “A school should be a safe haven where children can learn and grow. And right now, arming teachers is the only practical solution.” Safe schools are not known anymore, which is why safety is known in having possession of protection. Concealed carry is a huge controversial topic within the states today let alone on campus. Many debatable con arguments are the following: permitting concealed handguns increases crime, Second Amendment rights have limits, criminals are more likely to carry a gun, protection should be left to the police, and the public feels less safe. People too often believe two wrongs do not make a right; however, a firearm is a wonderful life saving object when in a time of desperation. USA Today published an article written by James Alan Fox in a means of rebuttal against the concealed carry on campus issue. He writes, “Opponents warn of the potentially dire consequences of allowing guns in an environment where depression and drinking are commonplace.” By this statement, Fox is referring to the adult activities that are known to occur when experiencing the college life. He believes situations will take a turn because confused people have access to a powerful weapon. He argues, “Who would be there to respond? Should it be a 21-year-old gun owner whose only experience has been at a pressure-free shooting range, or a campus cop who is trained to react effectively under stress?” What if the police are too far away and potential concealed carry owners turn into victims because a law restricts citizens from protecting themselves and others? In attempts to stop a needed law, students have formed debates at the foot of the University of Texas clock tower where the first mass casualty occurred for a school campus.
The New York Times author, Dave Phillips, creates an article titled Grappling with Guns on Campus. Throughout his writing, he states several interviews with people in relation to the school who actively has a problem with or without the concealed carry law in Texas. For example, he writes, “I (Professor Lisa Moore) love what I do. I consider teaching and learning to be a sacred vocation. We want to do everything we can to promote it. I don’t see guns as a part of that. So, no, I won’t be allowing guns in my office.” Professor Moore is strongly against allowing firearms on campus locations, because she believes weapons do not matter when it comes to the subject of schooling. Author Phillips writes again, “It’s not that I’m (Huyler Marsh) afraid of getting attacked all the time. It’s more like a fire extinguisher or a seat belt… If I call 911, it might be ten minutes before they get here.” Despite two opposing viewpoints, it is always better to be safe than sorry, because no one knows what another person will
do. A report from the Crime Prevention Center called Concealed Carry Permit Holders Across the United States contains information about locations of permit difference and statistics. The United States Government Accountability Office’s last conducted report on an estimated amount of conceal and carry permit holders showed an average of eight million Americans with permits. The averaged eight million Americans is equivalent to 4.8 percent of the country’s population; however, the amount is much higher because some states do not require residents to record through a concealed carry permit. The Crime Prevention Center report also states that the murder rate across the country has decreased from 5.6 percent to 4.4 percent because of people having access to protect themselves. Who wants life? Who wants death? By being for concealed carry on campus, life is chosen. By being for gun-control, death is chosen. Police are commonly misunderstood for always being known as heroes. When officers are ten minutes away and the gun man is two classrooms down, should everyone wait for police to reprimand the shooter or take charge to insure the safety of lives? Being a hero means being so noble that the current situation is stopped and the day is saved. More often than not, in today’s society, every man is for himself which is why concealed carry on school campus by teachers should be allowed. Teachers protect students from bullying, misjudgment, and abuse so why can teachers not help protect from danger? Teachers are often heroes too.
