The two poems I will be focusing on today are 'Girl talking' and 'Lizzie, six'. Both poems follow two innocent children that were abused either sexually or physically. There are two apparent themes in both poems, Loss of innocence and also Growing up. I will be discussing both of these and in which way are they portrayed in the poems I have chosen.
'Girl talking' is a poem based on a young girl who was raped, and died as a result. The poem opens with "On our Eid day". Instantly we see that the narrator is a Muslim due to it being the end of Ramadan, a Muslim holiday. This poem is written in third person, from the point of view of the cousin in this case. This is made clear to us in the first line "On our Eid day my cousin went to the village". The use of shorts sentences in this poem is used very effectively to portray the pain that the child felt and how fast it was over with. This is shown all through the poem but the first time we notice it is in the first stanza. "Something happened. We think it was pain." This instantly makes us wonder what has happened, I believe the shorts sentences are very effective for pulling the reader in. There is an idea formed that she was raped. This is formed through the line "She gave wheat to the miller and the miller gave her flower". "Afterwards it did not hurt" also suggests to the reader that she was raped, this makes us feel for the character and what she has gone through at such a young age. At the end of the first stanza we learn that the girls name is Tasleen. "Tasleen, do come out with us" shows that she is reluctant to go outside, maybe as a result of what had happened to her previously. I believe this is the first sign we see of her growing up in the poem, she no longer wants to go outside and spend time with her friends like children should.
At the beginning of the next stanza we automatically get the feeling of children enjoying themselves whereas Tasleen is not. "They
