Dementia delineates a group of symptoms affecting one’s memory, thinking, and social abilities. Dementia is considered a group of symptoms affecting abilities rather than a specific disease. There are both cognitive and psychological changes in one who has dementia. Difficulty in communication, problem solving, planning and organizing, and handling complex tasks are some common cognitive changes in a person dealing with dementia. Memory loss, confusion, and disorientation are also cognitive changes that are usually noticed by a spouse or someone in frequent contact (Mayo Clinic). Personality changes and inappropriate behaviors are apparent psychological changes along with depression, anxiety, paranoia, and agitation. A person with dementia may also experience hallucinations. He passed away when I was a young child so I don’t have much memory of him. I asked my mother what he was like as a person with dementia. She informed me that all his life he was a fun, loving man that would do anything for anyone and wouldn’t hurt a fly. Once he was diagnosed with dementia it turned him into a whole new human being.
