How Does Exercise Affect Your Breathing Rate
My testable question was “How does exercise affect your breathing and heart rate?” and my hypothesis was “If you exercise then your heart and breathing rates will go up because your body needs more oxygen to be circulated so that your body can keep up.”. My hypothesis was correct, as proven by my test. My partner, Brian’s heart rate when it was resting was 56 beats per second and his breathing rate was 40 beats per second. We made him do jumping jacks for ten seconds and his heart and breathing rates both went up. His heart rate increased to 100 beats per seconds and his breathing rate got to be 48 beats per second. This alone supports my hypothesis because in my hypothesis I said exercise, like jumping jacks, increases your heart and breathing rates. …show more content…
Just to make sure that the first test wasn’t a fluke we put Brian through three more rounds of jumping jacks increasing the length of time he exercised by ten seconds every round. After 20 seconds of jumping jacks, Brian’s heart and breathing rates did not increase at all. After 30 seconds of jumping jacks his heart rate increased to 108 beats per minute and his breathing increased to 52 breaths per minute. Then we made Brian exercise for 40 seconds. After that his heart rate jumped to 160 beats per minute and his breathing increased to 64 breaths per minute. After running all these tests we decided that no that first test was not a fluke and that yes my hypothesis is correct. To make sure that his increased breathing and heart beat was due to the exercise we also measure Brian’s heart and breathing rates after he rested for a minute. They decreased to 132 heart beats per minute and to 48 breaths per minute. Then after another minute of rest his rates had continued to go down to 84 heartbeats per minute and 40 breaths per minute.     In this experiment, we tested three different conditions in the dive response to see whether heart rate decreased with each treatment. To characterize the dive response, we measured subjects’ heart rates at rest and with their face submerged under a tub full of room temperature water. After that initial step of the experiment, two more treatments were tested to see whether or not it would affect the dive response; when resting, the subject would be able to breath during the thirty seconds, and when submerged, the subject could move their feet slowly as if they were swimming. The latter treatment experiments were then compared to the first experiment done, where the result was used as a control to the new experiments. The purpose of the experiment was to see if there was a difference between the control and experiment; the experiment being movement and breathing. We found that there was a significant difference between the resting and submerged treatments when there is no movement and breathing; (0.009<0.05; P<0.05). With the breathing experiment; (P=0.18, P<0.05), there is no significant difference between the control and the experiment, and with the movement experiment; (P=0.08; P<0.05); this experiment also showed that there is no significant difference in heart rate when moving ones feet and not moving.     It was confirmed that group 4 did have the greatest increase in heart rate but there was no correlation between the data to prove that group 4 had the biggest difference in blood pressure. To further our data we would look deeper into the correlation between the fitness level of the participants and the difference in their heart rate. For some individuals in our data exercise affected their heart rate, but not as much for others. This is seen in group 4, where individual 10 worked out and still had a higher difference in heart rate then individual 11. Some errors that could have occurred to result in this data could’ve been individual 11 not following the claps to know when to take another step and fell behind causing their heart rate to not increase as much.
