How Does Family Influence My Identity

Secondly, family is known as the first and most important influence that forms my identity. My family started influencing my identity from the moment I was born. I remember my grandfather saying that we are all born in different places, and in those places there are different races, but we are all people and should be treated equally. When I was young, I did not know what was allowed in society and what was not. My family made it a point to teach me that just because someone has a different skin tone then I did. Did not mean that they were any different from me or that I couldn’t be their friend. For instance, growing up I mostly had white friends, but I had one friend in fifth grade name Jocelyn and she was Hispanic. I obviously am a child did not care that she was Hispanic, we got along and always had fun together. It was nice to have a friend who had the same Hispanic background as I had. My family taught me how to love everyone equally. By introducing me to their values and principles about race, I naturally and unconsciously developed a part of my own identity. Identity cannot be found or fabricated, but emerges from within when one has the
I’ve grown up in a reasonably diverse area, so maybe that is why I do not care about people of a different color or race. For example, freshman year of high school my school started to get a lot of immigrants. Just because they are different and did not grow up the same way that I did does not give me the right to think of them as a lesser human being then I am. As the late Martin Luther King once stated “we may all have come in different ships, but we are in the same boat now”. In conclusion, Identity is what makes me a unique induvial. Self-identity may be influenced by many elements. My race influenced my identity through school, family and social media. These elements have made me who I am today and who I will be
