Hatsumomo is the Geisha in her okiya making the most money, but Sayuri might come in and change that if Sayuri is able to become a Geisha. Hatsumomo then decides to enact revenge against another Geisha that causes Sayuri to take all the blame. Sayuri is unable to defend herself from this because of her position of power. Hatsumomo not only uses her power, but also her hate towards Sayuri and Sayuri's potential. Later on Pumpkin, Hatsumomo's younger sister, betrays Sayuri when Pumpkin brings the chairman instead of Nobu, to see Sayuri having sex with the Minister. Sayuri specifically asks Pumpkin to bring Nobu in hopes of calling off any past relations with him. Sayuri hopes that if Nobu were to see her and the minister, she might be able to woo the chairman and not have to worry about Nobu. When Sayuri asks Pumpkin to take Nobu and have them see Sayuri and the minister having sex, she hopes her future of having Nobu as her Danna won't happen. Luckily for her, he backs out of this plan. Even though her plan goes awry, Nobu still finds out about her and the minister, and is no longer able to love Sayuri for cheating on him. Sayuri risks everything she has in order for a chance with the Chairman because of her love for him. Soon after Nobu finds out, the Chairman admits he loves her back and understands that everything she's done is out of love towards to the Chairman. He also admits to her that he let Nobu try to become her danna instead of himself. He does this not out of romantic love to Nobu, but platonic love. This decision was also influenced by the fact they both are high ranking buissiness men. They both work at the same place however, bringing in closer bonds because of their situation. While he could live his life with Sayuri from the beginning, he chooses Nobu. In the end, different types of love show through, changing fate.
