his furniture, he avoid show up at the window out of his consideration of his family members, and lost the pleasure to eat, turns out, crawling became his only pleasure, which he likes:“ a gentle swaying motion rocked the body; and in the almost happy absentmindedness Gregor experienced, it might happen, to his own astonishment, that he would let go and crash to the floor”(417).As an insect, Gregor is free of his job and his responsibility for the family, and helpless, which he must need to depend on others to take care him. He also regrets that he would no longer support the family financially. Therefore, he decides to undergo with his metamorphosis, disappear entirely by the family’s will, and by his vanishment, the family would satisfy. His physical metamorphosis makes him no difference before and after: he accepts his fate, satisfies the family’s interest by sacrifice himself.
Despite Gregor undergo with his metamorphosis, Gregor’s family refuse to undergo with the metamorphosis, on the contrary, they decide to self-sacrifice to overcome the problem. Therefore, the family decided to solve the financial problems rather than rely on Gregor since he lost the ability to work, but working hard and getting jobs by themselves.“His mother, bent far over beneath the light, would be sewing ladies’ underthings for a dress shop; his sister, who had taken a job as a salesgirl, was studying stenography and French in the evening so as possibly to move to a better position later on.”(422)Hence, the family finally gain the money again, and lost the interest to take care and concern about Gregor’s comfort. Without Gregor, their worries of money were replaced by hope that their employment and lead them to better opportunities than relying on Gregor’s income. Finally, they overcome the problem of the loss of Gregor’s income, and they decided that they will move to smaller and cheaper apartments which can lead them a better life.
Moreover, based on the transformation of the family, in Grete’s metamorphosis, she transformed into an adult.
At first, she takes care of her brother Gregor because of sympathy, then ultimately her pity toward Gregor slowly diminished, which then she finds interesting in taking a job to help the family financially. At the end of the story, while looking at Grete, the parents cognize that their daughter turned into a woman, and would soon be able to find a husband, starting a better life. “It seemed to them almost a confirmation of their new dreams and good intentions when their daughter swiftly sprang to her feet and stretched her young body.”(433)The quote inferred that Grete has experienced her metamorphosis of being mature which she will start a new chapter in her life, taking more responsibilities of the family, and stretched her body for the family’s
dream.
Therefore, metamorphosis lie with overcoming the problem by hard work.
