Jem is one of the characters which showed his courage many times by confronting a situation or accepting difficult challenges. He showed his courage many times, but one of the examples is, “With movements so swift they seemed simultaneous, Atticus’s hand yanked a ball-tipped lever as he brought the gun to his shoulder. The rifle cracked Tim Johnson leaped, flopped over and crumpled on the sidewalk in a brown-and-white heap. He didn’t know what hit him”(Chapter 10, pg 127). This evidence showed his courage by killing mad dog. By these action he save his kids, and people in Maycomb. Because of this situation Jem and Scout started to be proud and impressed of theirs father. They did not think that Atticus is that much brave. Another example, “ ‘For a number of reason’ said Atticus. ‘The main one is, if didn’t i couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature. I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again”(Chapter 9, pg 100). Atticus from the beganing knows that he is going to lose the case. He knows that people will hate him because he defend the black man. Also, he knew that it would harm his reputation. However, he commits because if he will not do this he cannot hold up his head. He will feel bad. By take this case he showed his courage because not every man will take this case even when he/she know the consequences of this
