As kids Johnny and Ponyboy didn’t talk much, Ponyboy was 14 and Johnny was 16. Ponyboy was the youngest of the gang while Johnny was the gang's little pet. In the beginning Ponyboy gets jumped by the Socs and is extremely scared, this changes him because now Ponyboy is more aware of how cruel the Socs are. Johnny was changed early in his life when his parents neglected him at an early age. Ponyboy and Johnny accidentally fell asleep at a outside theater, Johnny’s parents wouldn’t care but Darry would. Because of this Ponyboy rushes home then gets in trouble by Darry, so he runs away. Ponyboy is changed by this because it is obvious to him that Darry doesn’t want him around the house anymore. …show more content…
Next Johnny and Ponyboy get jumped by the Socs and Ponyboy is about to die from drowning until Johnny kills the Soc.
Once this happens both of them are scared and don't know what to do, or in other words they are clueless. They both seek Dally’s help for a plan because he has been in a situation like this and can give them money, etc... to run away. By this point they both were scared to death. Over the next week Johnny and Ponyboy live in an abandoned church and they get used to the living conditions. They begin to finally feel comforted; until the church was set on fire due to one of the cigarettes that wasn’t put out. This gave Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally an urge to help five children that were stuck inside the church. Johnny and Dally were severely injured, Johnny more than Dally, and Ponyboy had only minor injuries. After this Johnny and Ponyboy felt heroic and that it was the right thing to
do.
After almost a week's time Ponyboy is all better but Johnny is not and Dally seems to be fine. Ponyboy is extremely worried along with the entire group of Greasers that met up after the church incident. Everyone was excited for the upcoming rumble with the Socs except Ponyboy. Even Dally is excited, he is planning to escape the doctor by using a blade to threaten them. Meanwhile Johnny is in the hospital trying to stay alive. After the rumble Dally and Ponyboy visit Johnny. Dally tells Johnny they won the rumble, but Johnny responded saying, “Useless...fighting’s no good…” Johnny then tells Ponyboy to Stay Gold then he dies knowing that, Dally, his idol says that he’s proud of him. Unlike Dally who throws a tantrum once he dies, Ponyboy stands there in shock at what he had just witness while tears fill up in his eyes, obviously overwhelmed by the fact that he’s dead.
In conclusion Johnny and Ponyboy’s emotions stay pretty low but at some times they are happy. Living life on the edge like Ponyboy and Johnny did was tough for both of them as they rode on a roller coaster of emotions. In all, a lot can come from a poor greaser, especially one that only wants Paul Newman and a ride home.
