Irony, in literature can be anything from sarcasm to a shocking plot twist that can be inconvenient to the characters toward the end. A type of irony is situational which is where something very unexpected shows up at the last minute making the outcome of the story completely different then you expected. Such as the one in Lord of the Flies that effects one special character named Simon, and really almost all the characters.…
Irony is a literary technique, originally used in Greek tragedy. In the story, The Pedestrian Bradbury uses irony to write the whole story. Mr. Mead wasn’t doing anything wrong, he was just walking and yet he was arrested. Another example of irony is in the story Fahrenheit 451 when he explains the fireman’s theory. “Plant the books, turn in the alarm, and see the fireman’s houses burn, is that what you mean?” (85). The wrong is so obvious in both of these examples but things that are wrong still happen and irony is used to make us see these wrongs…
Irony is an event that the reader expects to happen, but is the quite opposite, usually for a funny or dramatic effect. In An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Peyton Fahrquar is sentenced to death by hanging by the federal military during the civil war for attempting to burn a bridge they were controlling. In this short story, Fahrquar jumps off of the bridge with the noose around his neck and his hands and feet tied, but he still lives. This is an example of irony because the reader will expect him to die instantaneously, but suddenly it was as if the rope grew longer and he fell into the water. As he ‘escapes’, sharpshooters aim and fire, but not a single round will touch him. At the end of the short story, it explains how Fahrquar runs all night to get to his family, just as…

There are verbal irony, situational irony and dramatic irony. An example of verbal irony from Ransom of Red Chief is on page 65 paragraph 6 it says “Me?” says I. “Oh, I got a kind of pain in my shoulder. I thought sitting up would rest it.” This is verbal irony because he is actually scared of Red Chief and that is why he is getting up. An example of verbal irony from Home Alone is when Kevin says he’s not scared when he really is. This is verbal irony because what he said is the opposite of what he feels. An example of situational irony in the Ransom of Red Chief is on page 67 paragraph 9 when they say “I was only playing a joke,” says he sullenly “I didn’t mean to hurt Old Hank. But what did he have to hit me for? I’ll behave Snake-eye if you won’t send me home. And if you let me play an example in Ransom of Red Chief is on page 71 paragraph 12 it says “In about a half an hour, I heard the bushes rustle. Bill wobbled out into the little clearing in front of the cave. Behind him was the kid. He came stepping softly like a scout, with a broad grin on his face.” and on page 72 paragraph 3 it says “The boy is gone. I have sent him home. All our plans are off.” This shows that Bill doesn’t know the boy is right behind him. This is dramatic irony. An example of dramatic irony from the movie Home Alone Kevin doesn’t know his family left for vacation. This is also dramatic irony. So this shows how all three types of irony can affect the reader and also the characters in a…
The short stories “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe and “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne use verbal irony to elaborate the text. Both short stories explain the verbal type of irony. Verbal irony is a situation in which a character says the opposite of what he or she means. Verbal irony is not always shown in the text directly. The reader most of the time has to continue reading until the end of the passage, to actually see if it was verbal irony instead of a different type of irony.…
Numerous artists, such as William Shakespeare and Richard Connell, used irony to entertain and engage their audiences. In the well-renown Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare used irony and foreshadow to strategize the story line of the tragedy. Various successful authors and directors use irony to make their story-line more appealing to their audience. In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”, Richard Connell uses the three types of irony: dramatic, verbal and situational to the engage readers and keep the theme and story-line stimulated.…

“Buy Local, shrink the distance food travels, save the planet.” Locavore is a diet a person takes up to eat only local food. Irony and surprise are common literary devices authors use to communicate their ideas when writing literary works. Irony allows the writer to suggest an interpretation that is different from the literal meaning of the words used in the text. The element of surprise allows the writer to manipulate the reader’s expectations and take them somewhere completely different. In the short stories, A Good Man Is Hard to Find by Flanney O’Connor and Happy Endings by Margaret Atwood, both authors use the element of irony and surprise to engage readers and to develop deeper levels of meaning in their text.…
Dramatic irony- the reader knows something the character doesn’t know Unexpected irony- something happens differently than what is expected Verbal irony- the character says the opposite of what he means…
Besides the symbolism in the story, the types of irony used, situational and dramatic irony help emphasize the image of a family dealing with each other while dealing with the phase of death. The family relations as well as the country environment are expressed through these types of irony. They often occur as while the book does deal with serious issues, the family dynamic is a big part of the novel and the people around them get involved with them.…
Dramatic irony is sometimes used to intensify a scene or act. By doing this, the plot of the story, or play, is made more interesting. One example is Oedipus taunting Teiresias for his blindness, both physical and stellar. He says, "You sightless, witless, senseless, mad old man!", "You child of endless night! You can not hurt me or any other man who sees the sun." Oedipus constantly made remarks to Teiresias blindness and his sight, though unknowingly, Oedipus himself was the "child of endless night", the "sightless, witless, senseless" man. His own sight blinded him of the truth, which had been told to him in more than one way. He decided not to listen to the truth, but rather seek it out himself.…
