How Does Literacy Affect Me
Finally, the first day of kindergarten arrived. I was anxious to see it, but also very nervous at the same time. My mom told me it was going to be fine, but I was till worried about it. Then, I started to walk in with my mom, and that’s when she said “have a good day at school John, I’ll see you in a little bit. Bye!” Then, I was all alone. So I walked into my class, and that's when my world opened up right in front of my eyes. I looked around, and saw my new friends. I walked over to my table, sat down, and looked around. I turned to the back, and I was amazed by all the books there were. And that's how it started. I learned how to read, and started reading like there was no tomorrow. That’s how my personal literacy became reading. I like …show more content…
Right now, I am strong at understanding texts and reading books, but weak at writing essays and taking notes. And reading wasn’t my personal literacy, I would have different strengths and different weaknesses for example, if a sport is my personal literacy, I would be strong at exercise and running, but weak at certain stuff like school work if I focus too much on sports. Another thing I am strong at is writing. I am pretty good at writing personal narratives, realistic fiction, and argumentative essays. I get good grades writing them and I also have a fun time writing them. But I am not so good at compare and contrast essays. I don’t really enjoy them that much, and I find the body paragraphs hard to …show more content…
One of these goals from my Writer's Notebook is to get better at taking notes. Right now, I read a lot, so I need to take notes. But since i'm not that good at taking notes, I have a hard time understanding the text. If I get better at taking notes, I’ll be able to understand my books better and I could use this during books in school. Another goal I have from my goal poster is to get better at compare and contrast essays. In 7th Grade, I had to write a lot of compare and contrast essays, and I wasn’t to good at it. So I got bad grades from it. But if I work hard this year and get better at this, my grade will go up and I can write them easier. Another writing goal from my goal poster is to be able to cite text evidence better. On my research paper last year, we had to cite text evidence a lot. And I wasn’t that good at citing text evidence. So I hope to get better at it this

My literacy skills begun like most of the other people. First, it begun by listening typical nursery rhythm, and bedtime stories. As I write this, I have my four year old niece sitting next to me saying, “Wow, you have a lot of drawing on your page!” All I can do is laugh to myself and think that was once me, not knowing the meaning of each word and innocently intrigued by the simple presence of words on a paper. This interest would soon turn into the curiosity to read. Hoping to read as gracefully as my mother when she read bible stories before my twin sister and I would drift off to sleep, I was devastated to find out I didn’t read as well as the other children. In fact, I had to be pulled from my reading class to a remedial class with one on one interaction between the teacher and student. As disappointed as I was then, I’ll…

“A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge,” said by a famous American novelist, George R.R. Martin. Personally, I couldn’t agree more with this quote. Books are always being with me throughout my life. My literacy journey started when I was nine years old. I started with some simple Dairy and short stories.…

When you hear the word literacy what comes to mind? Do you think of words or school or horrible comprehension tests? When I hear the word literacy none of the above is what comes to my mind. I think of when I was young, no more than five, and I would sit on my grandmother’s warm lap wrapped up in her arms that seemed to protect me from any and everything while she read to me. I think of the struggle and the many trials it took to spell and write my own name, but also relishing in the sense of accomplishment I felt. I think of the times I read along to books my mother would read to my sisters and me until I could read them on my own. Finally, I think of the smiles and proud looks on my parents’ and grandparents’ faces when ever I would show…

It had been a crazy morning as I ran all over my house trying to find my jacket and boots. My mom had been admitted into the hospital that morning for a massive headache and all I could think about was whether or not she would be okay. I took her to the emergency room that day before so going to class was the last thing on my mind. My father and sister had agreed to stay with her till I ended class so I was more at ease knowing she wouldn’t be alone. After running all over my house looking for my things I quickly gathered myself to make my train. I finally got to Penn Station with four minutes to spare. I quickly walked to where the rest of my class was as we waited for instructions to where we would…

It was the night before my first day of kindergarten, and I was as anxious as ever; I was ready to learn all about the alphabet and the many different letters that were a part of it. My mom had told me that school was the place where I would learn these, and I thought school would be the best thing to ever happen to my life… little did I know. My first day of kindergarten, the teacher told us everything that would be going on for the year. I was just waiting for her to say "learning how to write the letters of the alphabet." Suddenly, those words finally sprang from her mouth, and I just about jumped out of my chair. I didn't fully understand why I wanted to learn to write; however, whenever the topic was brought up by someone, all I wanted was to magically know how. It absolutely intrigued and thrilled me that people were able to use these things called letters to communicate without speaking. My teacher really made me excited to learn the…

As I began studying and as I grow up, I had access to a good school, and good teachers. While Yousafzai didn’t have access to good schools, she learned by herself. One similarity that I had is family support, as well as Yousafzai. If I look deeply in the past and try to remember how I became literate, of course, I will recall that there are many influences that have affected my literacy. These influences are divided into two sections because I am a bilingual person. I have some influences that make me literate in Arabic, and I have other influences that make me literate in English.…

Like most, when I think of the word literacy my mind automatically goes towards my english classes, poems, papers or readings. This may be because the word has more than one definition, one being “the ability to read or write”. Although, there is another meaning that changes the words interpretation around, “Competence or knowledge in a specific area”. This means anything you consider yourself knowledgeable about is a literacy. Everyone encounters different literacies in their lives.…

Dear Grace Literacy is crucial to the success of individuals in both their career aspirations and their quality of life. Strong literacy skills are closely linked to the probability of having a good job, decent earnings, and access to training opportunities. Individuals with weak literacy skills are more likely to be unemployed or, if employed, to be in jobs that pay little or that offer poor hours or working conditions. Traditionally, literacy has referred to the ability to read, understand, and use information. But the term has come to take on broader meaning, standing for a range of knowledge, skills and abilities relating to reading, mathematics, science and more.…

My literacy journey had a very interesting beginning. I am a first generation Mexican American, and as being first generation my first language is Spanish, everyone I interacted with when I was young was family or Hispanic. I picked up on some English from watching kid shows but I never really knew what the words meant. Prior to starting preschool, the school got me and my mother into an ELL summer class to get a head start on the school year. Up until around first grade or so I always had to meet with the ELL teacher to check on my progress and make sure I was doing okay in school.…

My experiences with literacy had a great deal of variation throughout my middle and high school years. When it comes to reading I have found that I greatly enjoying reading for entertainment but when I am forced to read something for scholastic value I often struggle to find the drive to actually read it and will take me twice as long actually comprehend what I have just read. When it comes to writing, I’ve always felt like it is one of the areas in which I find the least enjoyable and have the biggest difficulty in. Although I do not consider myself I terrible writer I always struggle finding the right words.
