How Does Molarity Concentration Affect Diffusion
The purpose of this lab was to observe how molarity concentration affects diffusion.The lab was primarily based on osmosis and diffusion. Diffusion is when the movement of molecules from a high concentration that go to a low concentration to a high concentration to eventually reach an equilibrium. Osmosis is when water will diffuse from high water concentration to low water concentration to reach equilibrium. When the solutions are different the lower concentration solute is hypotonic while the higher concentration solute is hypertonic. The hypertonic solution would have a low water potential with a high solute potential. Hypotonic would be the opposite because water potential and solute potential are inversely proportional. The possible errors for labA could be a leak in the dialysis bag from the floss not being tight enough. For labB a possible error could be the oils from your hands blocking the pores messing up the data.Inaccurate measuring like not completely drying the potatoes or dialysis bag. Calculating or copying down the data incorrectly are all big factors that could’ve messed up the data. This experiment relates to one of the biggest concepts in biology, the activity of a human cell.The rate of diffusion depends on the properties of the cell and the surrounding solution. A substance like water and other molecules are needed for cellular processes to enter and exit the cell by passive diffusion or facilitated diffusion. If it weren't for diffusion cells wouldn't be able to survive.Cells react based on their environment. Hypertonic solution will make a plant cell shrink, losing water in cytoplasm, and the cell would plasmolyze which happened to the onion cell when added NaCl(the environment became hypertonic). In an isotonic solution, the plant cell wouldn’t provide enough turgor pressure to support the cell wall. The hypotonic environment for plant cell is best for

    Diffusion and Osmosis are two concepts that go hand in hand with each other. Diffusion is simply described as the movement of a substance from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration. In another words, the substance will move down its concentration gradient which is “the region along which the density of a chemical substance increases or decreases” (Campbell Biology pg. 132). If you understand the concept of diffusion then osmosis is a very simple process. It can be defined as the diffusion of water across a permeable membrane. Osmosis can be cellular or artificial, so even though we are creating artificial cells in this lab, it is still considered to be osmosis.     INTRODUCTION: In order to fully understand the concept of this experiment, one must first be introduced to diffusion. Diffusion is a spontaneous process by which molecule particles move from one area that is highly concentrated to another area in which its concentration is lower. Cells contain fluids and are surrounded by fluids; in order for a cell to function it is required to be in a balanced state. The progress in which a cell is in its balanced state is called equilibrium. Diffusion is a functioning way for cells to reach their equilibrium. Equilibrium is reached by controlling what enters and exits the cell through a cell membrane that selectively filters molecules by slowing down their movement, allowing them to pass through, or not allowing them to pass through the membrane. Diffusion and osmosis go hand-in-hand. Osmosis is generally the same as diffusion, however, deals solely with water. Osmotic pressure is the pressure of a solution against a semi-permeable membrane to prevent water from flowing into the membrane. In this lab, we are going to study tonicity; tonicity is the measure of this osmotic pressure and is the differential of pressure between two solutions separated by a selective membrane. To help identify the relative concentrations of solute particles of different solutions, we must understand that there are three possible differences in concentrations between a cell and its environment. The terms hypotonic, hypertonic, and isotonic are used in referring to the identification of the possible relative concentrations.
