He says that “they were careless people, Tom and Daisy--they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made” (Fitzgerald 179). He finally sees Daisy and Tom for the rich, snobs they are. Nick wants to believe that they are good people and decent human beings, but it is the opposite. They show up, shut up, and once something goes wrong, they leave and fail to take responsibility for their actions. Daisy, as well as Tom, entered into this marriage for the money and it was the only thing keeping them together. When Daisy has a chance to change her destiny, she shies away because she won’t be able to live like she always has. She is incapable of taking risks and Daisy refuses to take a tiny risk. Gatsby is a relatively daring person and it dominates Gatsby’s downfall. He wants an adventure with Daisy but after the deathblow, one part of Daisy is explored about how she fails to deal with problems and responsibilities. In this instance, Gatsby is essentially the “cleanup crew” for Daisy because he takes responsibility for her actions.
