participating in these campaign adds and videos, it showed the public that we all need to participate in the elections. MTV erring these commercials strongly influenced young adults to vote. Being that MTV erred these made it even more of a pressing issue for those 18 years of age and above to make the decision to vote.
Almost everyone has grown up eagerly staring at music videos on MTV and wanting nothing else on this planet than to be the guy or girl on that screen. Trends are set with every new video that comes out, but MTV causes such emphasis on these looks or ways to act that the result is crazes. Justin Beiber is plastered all over MTV with his signature hair that makes all of the girls go wild. You can only guess what every little boy is asking for in the barber’s chair. When Britney Spears premièred her new hit video on TRL live “I’m not a girl not yet a woman” in 2003. She not only premièred a new video but the brand new style of ultra low cut light flare jeans. It seemed like the very next day every teenage girl in the world had a pair or desperately wanted a pair. Point proved. When MTV is heavily supporting an artist and playing their videos constantly, with every intent to make the viewers want to buy their music, sing their songs and have their style.
When you think of mind alteration, you usually get the vision of drugs or maybe substance abuse.
Whenever you think of mind alteration nobody really gets the mental image of a teenager mindlessly watching an episode of MTV’s “Jersey Shore”. This brings me to another of one of MTV’s effects, changing the way you think. MTV introduced a crazy cast of loud young Italians with the ultimate “Guido” lifestyle and put them in a house on the Jersey Shore with a 24-hour film crew. Who would have thought a year later and you have one of the most popular and most talked about reality show on T.V. Having a different girl over every night to “smush”, drinking excessively every day, and cheating or lying to someone you supposedly “love” are just some of the events that happen on this moral lacking show. No matter how much someone says watching this show doesn’t change them or their beliefs. By watching the show your condoning all the behavior that’s occurring. Over time MTV is slowly corrupting the way we think. Making everything we watch seem expectable, when we believe the
opposite.
Thinking of my peers, the last words that would come to mind would be pure and innocent. I believe that MTV shows are robbing us of even the last ounce of purity or innocence we have left. Putting obscene images of Katy Perry shooting whip cream out of her candy coated bra in her new music video “California gurl" or G-unit rapping “I’ll let you lick my lollipop” in his hit song “candy shop” completely changes our view of the innocent thought of a sweet treat.
The effect of MTV is one that is positive in some light and negative in many others. All of the trashy music videos and indecent lyrics in most of the songs on MTV today are not directing us into the positive light whatsoever. The only reason MTV has such a strong hold on our society is because we all let this lewd station stay popular. Changing the way you think is very powerful. If you let the effects of desensitization slowly wear down your beliefs and morals you will have nothing to go by.
