The first character is the friendly Nick Carraway. As a child, he was taught to not judge people. Ever since he was a child, he has been the man who everyone goes to tell him their secrets to. In this story, Nick is friends with some people in high places. For example, his cousin is married to a very rich man. Along with his cousin, Nick is close friends with another rich man who lives right next to him named Gatsby. Sadly, Nick is not as rich as his friends. A way the author shows this is having Nick live in a small, old landlord’s home for only $80 a month. Throughout the book, Nick never really changes his outlook on life and is almost always nice and polite to everyone.

Gatsby is almost never honest about his past because he doesn’t want people to know how shady and untrustworthy he really is. For example, in the book it he explains to Nick who he hangs around, “Meyer Wolfsheim? No, he’s a Gambler”(Fitzgerald 73). Gatsby is friends with a gambler who has no real income and has probably never had a real job. Also, Gatsby repeatedly does some questionable things like how on his date with Daisy, he gets a suspicious phone call in which he was angrily talking into the phone.
