Things Fall Apart Precise
Chinua Achebe’s novel, Things Fall Apart, tells the story of a man named, Okonkwo who lives in a village in Nigeria. Okonkwo is a well respected leader and wrestler in his village who gained his respect through self accomplishments. Okonkwo’s father was a less than ideal role model and was known for his laziness and in ability to pay back dues, so as a result Okonkwo was ashamed. This feeling of shame stuck with Okonkwo throughout his life and played a role in many of his actions. Later in the novel when a man in a neighboring village kills a woman of Okonkwo’s village, the man who killed the woman is required to give his son to Okonkwo’s village. Okonkwo …show more content…
Eventually the week of peace came and Okonkwo accused one of his wives of mistreatment as he then severely beat his wife which disrupted the sacred time. As time passed Ikemefuna continued to stay with Okonkwo and he became a part of the family. One day Okonkwo is informed by an Oracle that Ikemefuna has to be killed. Ikemefuna is later lied to and taken with men of the village who go on to kill Ikemefuna and Okonkwo takes part in fear of being seen as weak if he does not. After killing Ikemefuna, Okonkwo becomes depressed. Later on Ogbuefi, the man who told Okonkwo not to take part in the killing of Ikemefuna dies deepening Okonkwos remorse and depression. On Okonkwo’s departure his compound is destroyed to rid of his sins. Eventually Okonkwo establishes a life within his mothers village and during his second year of exile he is visited by his close friend, Obierika who brings the money, he mad off the yams of Okoonkwos farm, more importantly though Obierika tells of a village that was destroyed by white men, named Abame. Later on a group of missionaries come to Okonkwos mothers village. The missionaries leader, Mr. Brown brings the Christian faith, casting out the religions of the natives. The natives find the religion peculiar but when the missionaries defy the natives former beliefs, a movement of converts begins. Soon after the leader, Mr. Brown becomes sick and gets replaced by a man named James Smith. James Smith is less respectful and concerned about rules which leads a native, Enoch to disrespect spirits of the village by unmasking one of them. Later this leads the people to burn James Smith’s Church. As a result the white men are upset and request the leaders of the village to meet them, where they are thrown in jail and abused. After being released Okonkwo is enraged and expects that his fellow clansmen want to fight as well, so Okonkwo goes on to
