After visiting his sick father in Sudan, Salva gets inspired to bring clean water to the people who need it in Sudan by digging wells for them.Salva relies on his family, outside help, and perseverance to survive.
Family can help you survive hard times. Salva had to walk through the desert and was almost giving up. But then his Uncle Jewiir told him that he only had to walk to a certain point which made the walk easier for Salva. In pages 53-54 the author says,” ’ Do you see that group of bushes?’ uncle said pointing. ‘You need only to walk as far as those bushes. Can you do that, Salva Mawien Dut Ariik?’... uncle continued this way for the rest of the walk.” This quote shows that Uncle Jewiir helped Salva survive because he broke down the walk for Salva which prevented Salva from collapsing in the desert like other men did after not having enough water.
However there is another time that Uncle Jewiir helped Salva survive. After Salva’s friend Marial was eaten by lions during their walk,

In addition, Gram and Gramps also helped Sal accept her mother’s death. Within the book, on page 143 Gram says to Sal, “Sometimes you know in your heart you love someone, but you have to go away before your head can figure it out” (Creech 143). I can infer, that Gram was trying to explain to Sal that her mother didn’t leave because of her, but to clear her mind. Gram saying this to Sal was important for Sal’s knowing that her mother didn’t leave because of the baby that died before birth. Along with Gram saying that to Sal, she one day realized, “that our whole trip to Lewiston had been a gift from Gram and Gramps to me. They were giving me a chance to walking my mother’s moccasins - to see what she had seen, and feel what she might have felt on her last trip” (Creech 262). Although Sal didn’t realize it during the trip, looking back, she figures out that Gram and Gramps were leading her through the stages of grief and allowing her to cope with the loss of her mother. Surely, Gram and Gramps had an impact on Sal accepting her mother’s death in numerous ways.…

In almost anyone’s eyes, family comes first. You would do absolutely anything for them, and in the novel Kindred by Octavia Butler there is no exception. Although the novel concentrates on the previous existence of slavery and the harsh realities of racism, another theme that is not exactly centralized is how far an individual will go in order to protect their loved ones. In this particular novel, there are two major examples on how far a person will go for their family. On one end, you have the slaves protecting their loved ones from being sold, and on the other hand you have the strong bond between the main characters Rufus and Dana. Family can be described in many ways, a close relationship among a group of people through blood or even non-biological friends. Although there are so many differences, the one thing that remains similar between the two groups is the love and trusting relationship you posses.…

And on one night they camp off the side of the road, and run into the Wilson's, creating and merging into one large family, with one goal in mind, reaching California. But as the days of traveling continue, the family struggles to stay intact due to obstacles such as the staggering heat, lack of money, automobile breaking down, doubts brought upon by people who have been in California, and even death. But Steinbeck defines "family" as a unit with members who think of other members before themselves, and Ma expresses this idea clearly with Granma's death. The Joads have a connection where each member truly has someone to have their back when in need. Tom shares this with Casy and Al, Ma and Granma, Pa with Granpa and Uncle John, Ruthie and Winfield, Rose of Sharon and Connie, but then there's Noah who doesn't feel the same love which is one of the reasons that persuades him to depart from the family. They also have a structure in which Tom, Pa, Al, usually make family decisions and the eventually the final verdict is given to Ma. Overall, family is suppose to take care of each other when in time of need and work as one rather than individuals.…
