Do you hate the high prices in the store? It is because of all of the shoplifting that happens on a daily bases. Prices keep going up every year in stores. Part of the reason is shoplifting There are three main forms that affect us. The first thing is that the prices have increased in recent years due to the stores having to cover the cost of shoplifting. The second one is that shoplifting effects the entire community in many different ways. The third thing covered is how shoplifting is a silent crime. The final thing that will be covered is how to stop or decrease shoplifting in a store.
The first is shoplifting. Because of all of the shoplifting that happens on a daily bases. Prices keep going up every year in stores. Often prices rise to cover the theft. Shoplifting is a large part of this. All retailers have to raise the cost to cover the merchandise that is lost, if a retailer operates on a thirty percent profit margin they must sell 2.33 more units just to cover the cost of goods stolen, the retailer has still not made a profit. So often retailers need to raise their profit margins to cover the cost of theft. So an item …show more content…
that cost $100.00 at a thirty percent profit margin sells for $142.86 at a fifty percent margin the made item sells for $200. There is about $55 million worth of goods being stolen from retailers each year. It is costing stores about $13 billion from goods being stolen each year. That is more
than $35 million in losses per day. Shoplifters are estimated to swipe more than $18,000in merchandise every minute. That adds up to $25 million every day and $10 billion every year in 2005. It is a fact 1 in 11 people will commit the crime of shoplifting at some point in their lives, but only there has been 10 million people have been caught shoplifting in the last five years. It is a fact, about 25% of shoplifters are under the age of 18. Among adult shoplifters, 55% say they started shoplifting in their teens. In fact, according to NASP (National Association of School Psychologist), only 1 in 48 shoplifters are caught, and only about half of the people are turned over to police for prosecution. Often theft comes from the inside employees. Research has shown that 47 percent of inventory shrinkage, which is the most of any type of loss, is attributable to employee theft. The other categories are shoplifting at 32 percent; administrative error at 14 percent; vendor error at 4 percent; and “unknown” error at 3 percent.
The second one is that shoplifting affects the entire community in many different ways. The higher prices consumers must pay to cover the losses from theft. The inconvenience and invasiveness of security measures to consumers when shopping in stores. The loss of community jobs when stores are forced to close. The loss of local and state sales tax revenue
resulting in higher taxes for everyone.
The added burden on the police and the courts. The added financial and emotional hardship placed on families resulting from the arrest of a parent or child. By people shoplifting there may be fewer jobs available to teens if store owners lose money to shoplifter’s owners won’t generate enough profit to pay employees. Thirty percent of business failures in the United States are due to shoplifting and employee theft. The neighborhood store’s customers may have to travel farther to shop after the store closes. Many people assume that shoplifters have a mental disorder or that they must really need the items they are stealing in order to survive. But the truth is that's not why most people steal. Very few people have kleptomania is a compulsive urge to
steal
The third and final thing covered is how shoplifting is a silent crime. It is a silent crime because no one talks about no one does anything about it. It is often thought of as a cost of doing business. Many business to take something its cannot afford the measures necessary to prevent this type of crime. When a business does catch someone often the penalties do not warrant the time necessary to pursue charges. In school they never mention the costs of crime on society. Businesses and parents they not discuss the issue they would rather just push it aside and not deal with it. Often time’s teens just try it to see if they can get away with stealing and
believe that if they get caught the penalties are minor. Unfortunately there are often more pressing issues for the courts to deal with and thus the slap on the wrist. Until the community understands the magnitude of this problem it will remain .as it is. Many people feel that it is not a crime to take a small thing from a store. Some people try to pick up something to sell so they can pay for drugs. Some gangs try to have someone steal as part of an initiation into their group. In addition, some retailers believe that the police can do little about the problem and may be unwilling to get involved.
