Lennie cannot be blamed for murder because the only thing he knows is his and George’s “American dream”.
Lennie is very unintelligent, he has been since he was born. He also forgets very quickly. “I forgot,” Lennie said when he forgot where he was going,” I tried not to forget. Honest to God I did, George.” That is why he needs someone in his life to care of him. Luckily he has George to take him. Lennie listens to everything that George says. How can someone be guilty for murder when they physically needs someone to take care of him? Lennie may look big and scary, but he is very kind and soft. He would not hurt a soul even if he hated that
person. Maybe none of this could have happened. Maybe Curley’s wife never would have stepped in the barn. Curley’s wife lived a pretty horrible life. Her mother did not her pursue her dreams and Curley did not let her speak to anyone. So, she broke his rules. She would go talk to other men because she gets bored. Whit said,” ever’ time the guys is around she shows up. She’s lookin’ for Curley, or she thought she lef’ somethin’ layin’ around and she’s lookin’ for it. Seems like she can’t keep away from guys. An’ Curley’s pants is just crawlin’ with ants, but they ain’t nothing come of it yet.” All the men knew she was trouble from the start. But she should get pushing the men and her husband. When she walked in the barn she just wanted to talk. She tells Lennie about her life and Lennie tells her that he likes soft things. So, she puts Lennie’s hands on her hair. She is guilty of her own murder. To tie it all together, Lennie is excused from murder. This is because George did not watch over Lennie when he should have been. Also, Lennie’s I.Q. level is so low that he cannot take care of himself and he cannot remember anything. The last important factor is that Curley’s wife was lonely and forced Lennie to talk to her. With all of this evidence, the idea of Lennie not being guilty can be concluded. Looks like Lennie tied for nothing.
