Distorted body image, intense fear of gaining weight, and refusal to eat anything that will jeopardize current weight these are the thoughts in the minds of young women and girls today. Being showed images of perfect, fit women and wanting to be the same way. Everyday being told that if they don’t look a certain way or are a certain way size they won’t be accepted. With shows like America’s Next top Model and images from magazines like Vogue not helping to show them that these are incorrect ways of viewing themselves. In today’s media people are being showed ideas and images of volience, sexual promiscuity, and drugs to be good. Never knowing the true negative affects they have on society today. Collins in her novel The Hunger Games successfully portrays the negative affects the media and entertainment is having on society and its future. …show more content…
One of the ways Colllins showed this is how people will do anything for entertainment, even to go as far as putting young children in an arena to fight for their lives.
She showed how when the audience got bored with the games that the game-makers would intervene to make the games more exciting. This relates to our society the same way. For example how when the shows people watch no longer appeal to them, producers will come out with new shows, that are more exciting and crazier than the before in order to keep the attention of the people until they are no longer amused by that new show. Even though society does not go as far as to watch young children fight each other to the death, they will still are willing to do anything for good entertainment. Ways society does this by putting shows like Jersey Shore, Bad Girls lub, and The Real World on the air for the public to
enjoy. Another way Collins relates her novel to the way society is negatively changing is how people are a less caring and more selfish. In the novel the people in the capital no longer sees the games for they really are but for a time to remember where they were when an important event happened. For example like how on September 11 people often remember where they were as appose to a terrorist attack on American soil. Collins is trying to show people how if they don’t change they’ll be as heartless and insenstive as the people of the capital.
In conclusion society should change the way ideas and images are portrayed in the media. For this reason if people do not realize that the media is changing them in a negative way soon it will be too late and they’ll be like the society in The Hunger Games. People will be selfish, getting the wrong information that makes them change their views in a bad way and people will also be exposed to things that seem good for entertainment but are sending bad messages. People need to start being aware of the things they are being showed, so that they can decide what is good for them and not.
