How I Learned To Read
Although I don’t remember exactly how I learned to read, I guess it sort of came to me as a little child when my parents used to read me prayers and stories from the Bible. In middle school, reading was essential in getting a good grade for English with the "Accelerated Reader" system being implemented at our school. Basically, it was a online program where you would be able to take tests on books once you have read them, and each book had a certain amount of points based on its difficulty and length. Every semester, you needed to have a certain amount of points in order to get an A in English, and I always made sure too reach the point goal every year. My parents are the main reason of my success, and I will be forever thankful for the books they made me read and also for my success of …show more content…
From Hardy Boys to Geronimo Stilton, I remember having every single book that came out from the series, and reading it from front to back. As time progressed and middle school hit, I usually just read the really long books such as the Unfortunate Series of Events and Harry Potter Series in order to finish all my points for the semester, but it made me go out of my comfort zone and actually dedicate my time and attention to the book. My love for reading faded away as I went into high school, with mainly time and technology being the main reasons for my decline in reading. As high school came along, getting time to read was hard due to my schedule during the school years. Although I hardly read independently, I still enjoy reading the news online and short stories I find on Twitter, which are way more convenient and quicker to read. I also try to keep up with the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series during the summer and would like to finish the reading the Series of Unfortunate Events books, to find out what happens to Violet, Klaus, and Sunny after all these

I get aware of reading and writing skills at very early age, as I wanted to be successful. I started doing my all homework on time, passing my all classes, and doing more research. There were some of the impacts that helped me to learn better. As a young child my mother always told me stories.…

Although there is much I can’t recall from my early days of reading, there are some momentous flashbacks. When I was beginning elementary school my parents were very eager to introduce me to doing a great deal of reading, they wanted me to enjoy reading for a while and they succeeded. We lived within walking distance of the public library which allowed us to frequently visit the library to read and check out books. I always remembered the vast shelves of books that seemed like they never had an end. In addition to reading at the library we checked books out to bring home to read, this allowed me to read as much as I wanted to. Correspondent to the amount of reading I did, the more I enjoyed it and improved at reading.…

I used to love reading. In kinder and first, my nose was stuck in a Magic Tree House book. Third, fourth, and fifth grade I basically lived at Hogwarts (in my rightfully sorted house, of course, I am a proud Hufflepuff). And in middle school, I discovered THE tween series of my generation, Maximum Ride. Reading was exciting, and even though I had done it for years every time I picked up a book it felt so novel. I was your ordinary bookworm until seventh grade when the joint power of Ms. Green’s teaching and James Patterson’s writing broke my will to read.…

Growing up without my parents watching over me, I had to learn things on my own. I recall using books to fill in the gap; this established a solid vocabulary. The books that I read were not intended for my age group, I just read for fun! This knowledge that I grasped from books translated into my everyday vernacular. Even my teachers took notice of my elevated vocabulary and would refer me to even more books to read. Books allowed me to convert my thoughts into words, they helped me get through life, and taught me the importance of words.…

At the turn of the millennium, hurricanes, tropical storms, and dramatic temperatures ruled planet Earth. In the 2004 Hurricane season, four storms affected Florida which is the only time in recorded history a catastrophe like this has happened. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc in the New Orleans area, bringing over one hundred billion dollars of damages; making thousands of people homeless, mostly minorities, and killing many others. The Federal Government, unprepared for this unforeseen tragedy, was slow to respond, leaving people on rooftops begging for help, with no sustenance for survival. Shelby Steele, a research fellow and political commentator, from “Witness: Blacks, Whites, and the Politics of Shame in America,” The Wall Street Journal, doesn’t blame the Federal Government for the catastrophic results the hurricane had on minorities, mostly African Americans. Steele believes the hurricane exposed the underdevelopment of African American people as a society, and should take this as an opportunity to believe them. Other people, such as professor of Political Science, Adolph Reed, and professor of sociology Stephen Steinberg, at the University of Pennsylvania and Queens College respectively , believe Hurricane Katrina did expose racism in the America. I, personally agree with Reed and Steinberg, Hurricane Katrina did expose racism in America based on the responses from people high in power, the slow response of the U.S. Federal, government, and future projects for the New Orleans area.…

Frederick Douglass was a black slave who lived during the 1800s who lived with his mistress and her husband. Being a slave for life, you were not allowed to be educated in reading or writing; however his mistress had begun to educate him. His mistress was a kind-hearted woman who was glad to educate Douglass, but her under her husband’s influence she became fierce and ceased to instruct him. What Douglass means when he writes that “education and slavery were incompatible with each other” (paragraph 2) is they are mismatched and do not apply with each other. A slave cannot be educated or intelligent because when a person is “a slave for life,” (paragraph 7) they have no use for an education.…

As I write this, I have my four year old niece sitting next to me saying, “Wow, you have a lot of drawing on your page!” All I can do is laugh to myself and think that was once me, not knowing the meaning of each word and innocently intrigued by the simple presence of words on a paper. This interest would soon turn into the curiosity to read. Hoping to read as gracefully as my mother when she read bible stories before my twin sister and I would drift off to sleep, I was devastated to find out I didn’t read as well as the other children. In fact, I had to be pulled from my reading class to a remedial class with one on one interaction between the teacher and student. As disappointed as I was then, I’ll…

I used to love reading when there wasn't a lot of pressure or strict deadlines involved. I also liked being able to choose what I read, whenever I wanted to read it. Early on in elementary school I was free to choose whatever I pleased, and that caused me to become interested in some series of books. Soon enough the relaxing fun turned into stressful reading with deadlines, which turned my attitude about reading upside down. I tend to have a negative attitude towards old literature that is difficult to read because it feels like it turns reading into a mind taxing challenge. I prefer to be able to comprehend something the first time I read it, and for the text to be in the normal language that is used in our modern times. That being said, I have a positive attitude about reading things that I am interested in knowing more about. For example, I thoroughly enjoy reading articles about college, engineering, or technology. Anytime I receive some kind of college pamphlet in the mail or come across an interesting article about some upcoming device, I will almost immediately stop everything to read about it. I also appreciate action-packed novels set in post-apocalyptic scenarios where characters must overcome some form of supreme control such as The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner. In my opinion, anything that I enjoy learning about or that is exciting to me is worth…

    How I Learn to Read

It was a big process in order for me to start reading, but I think that the way I learned how to read was by learning the Alphabet at first; because in order to start reading I had to be able to recognize the letters I was trying to read. After I had mastered the alphabet I started practicing with high frequency words. These words were words that we were seeing in our school books, homework, reading, and lectures. These words were placed in small sentence and short stories that the teacher gave us to take home and we had to focus on the word or letter with the high frequency. At first, we did this for a week without a test or the teacher evaluating us, because they were words that we saw everyday in our books. In addition, to what we were seeing went in levels and themes and those themes or levels were more difficulty as we went on. Then, the teacher started counting the words we read in 5 minutes in order to see our progress. This was every Friday, because he had to read short stories related to the theme of the high frequency learning process given by the instructor. We were also given homework that consisted in reading at home for ten minutes every day and that was also check on Friday. While we were doing this we were also blending sounds practicing our pronunciation and having new vocabulary.…

For me learning to read was an extensive and boring experience; I took reading for granted and never suspected of the great knowledge that was hidden in every book, I thought was useless; the revelation came afterwards. It all started at home. I was about to be five years old and my mom was teaching me how to write my name. In my head I understood nothing of what I wrote but as far as I know that was my name, which would follow me the rest of my life.…

Two of the people that have had the biggest influence on my literacy education are my parents. When I was young, around the ages of 4-6, I have faint memories of my parents helping to enrich my literacy. They accomplished this by reading to me starting at a younger than average age. They did all sorts of things to further my education, not just helping to build literacy skills. However, some of the fondest memories I have from when I was really little are about reading. My parents helped improve my literacy by reading to me, buying me a lot of books, taking me to the library, and answering my questions about words/reading.…

How did I learn to read? Let me start from the beginning when I was a little kid, I was born in October 26th 1999, at jalisco, Mexico that is where my story took off. I can't recall what was my first book that I started reading when I was 3 years old I don't exactly know the name of the book but the title was something like “baby duck and the father”, I didn't know what genre it was but all I remember is that the book was just a piece of art that changed my world. I was a little kid that was anxious to go to elementary school because one day I went to an open house with my cousin named Uriel Moran, once I put a step on the school I thought it was in heaven, I was surprised, happy, scared, amazed but I couldn't stay there because I was just 3 years old but from the point all my mindset was different I started thinking about my future life.…
