How Is Courage Shown In Saving Private Ryan
In the film “Saving Private Ryan” there are a lot of times where there military virtues. There are serval different military virtues like courage, duty, honor, respect, and integrity. I’ll also be talking about the novel “All Quiet on the Western Front” by Erich Maria Remarque. I chose this theme because I feel like this is something that is overlooked with a soldier. Courage is something that is brought up a lot in the film “Saving Private Ryan”. Courage to me is an action that you do not for you but for the good of others. In the movie I saw many acts of courage, but the one that stood out to me is when Private Ryan told Captain Miller that he was staying because he wasn’t leaving his “brothers” and his post. I think this was courageous because he did not want to leave the men he has served with and was not going to leave his follow soldiers to be slaughtered by the Germans. In “All Quiet on the Western Front” I felt that when Paul brought back Kat after he …show more content…
Captain Miller showed his integrity because he and the soldiers both treated the German like a dog. The Captain saw this, and put away his emotions. He viewed the German not as the enemy but as a person. This action showed that his integrity was not taken away completely by the war. It shows the viewer that the Captain has mercy for this man. I feel integrity is important because without it there would not be compassion or mercy. Integrity is a quality that everyone has but they might not know how to demonstrate. I thought that Captain Miller was going to kill the German, but he did not. He changed his mind, his integrity took over and let the man live. He showed compassion to the man who killed his friend. Paul showed compassion for people in need of it. Some say that he pitied the men. I say that he looked at them and thought “If I was in their position I would do

This plays a large part in the development of Paul’s relationships with his other comrades’. Paul admires Kat for these qualities, because Kat can find food, he can also calm the men after a crazy and scary fight. Paul inherits a lot of these qualities as his experiences continue; they look out for each other on the front no matter what. Latter in the book, Paul and Kat come up to this Fair Haired Recruit who is now missing his whole leg. During this, Paul wants to shoot him because he knows that this recruit/comrade is going to die if he is sent to the hospital. Paul and Kat stayed with him, and the reason of this was that Paul had comforted him during the bombardment in the creator that a bomb made. In one of the chapters, Kat is seriously injured in his leg. Paul clambers over many injured soldiers (crying for help) to get Kat (demonstrates strong relationship). Paul drags Kat to safety to a nearby ditch to stay out of the bombardment. This shows us that Paul’s developed a relationship with his comrades and that they would all die for one…

In All Quiet on the Western Front, Paul comes into the war as a young and optimistic boy. The war is a fresh start for Paul and he holds many traits that eventually diminish through out the book. Entering the war after being convinced by a schoolmaster, Paul is positive and content. His elation is shown when he says, "Here it is beautiful. These are wonderfully carefree hours. Over us is the blue sky. On the horizon float the bright yellow, sunlit observation-balloons, and the many little white clouds of the anti-aircraft shells." Along with his positivism and happiness, Paul is also trusting. He demonstrates his trust for the elder soldiers in charge by saying, "We often made fun of them and played jokes on them, but in our hearts we trusted them. The idea of authority, which they represented, was associated in our minds with a greater insight and a more humane wisdom." In the early times of the war Paul is also immature. He demonstrates an act of immaturity by dumping a latrine-bucket on Himmelstoss along with other practical jokes. The war has not been deep yet and Paul, a boy who feels happiness, enthusiasm, and positivism, has yet to experience the harsh, life-changing factors of the war.…

Courage is the ability to do something that one knows is difficult or even dangerous. Winston Churchill once said “ Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen. In To Kill a Mockingbird Scout, Jem, and Atticus all show courage.…

When one of Paul’s best friends Kemmerich dies, Paul is the one who has to tell his mom about the bad news. One quote that points to this is, “I must go and see Kemmerich’s mother… This quaking, sobbing woman who shakes me and cries out on me: ‘Why are you living then, when he is dead?’” (181). Paul had enough bravery to talk to his dead friend’s mother about how her son died. Paul has to lie to Kemmerich’s mother or else she would have been even more devastated than she had been when she heard the bad news. Paul was devastated when his friend died but stayed brave because he knew with war came death. An example that also proves this is, “Kat falls. We two are alone… Couldn’t I shoot myself quickly in the foot so as to be able to go with him… ‘he is stone dead’ … Do I walk? Have I feet still? … Then I know nothing more” (287-291). Paul is even more affected by Kat’s death than Kemmerich’s death. Kat and Paul were best friends and stayed together all the time. Paul did not know what to do when Kat died, he is at a loss of words, and wanted to hurt himself to stay with Kat and go wherever he went. He was courageous even though he witnessed an awful death. Although Paul is a good comrade and a smart decision maker, his best trait is that he is a brave…

Tim O’Brien’s novel, The Things They Carried, revolves around the frequent theme of courage however, his perception of courage is ignorant considering the actual meaning of courage. O’Brien uses courage as an antidote to the physical and moral weakness in the soldiers of Vietnam creating character obsession over his interchangeable perception of courage and weakness. Not going to war when drafted is perceived as weak, but O’Brien believes that going to war when one wants to flee is Canada is arguable weakness. O’Brien believes no matter how strong or courageous a solider presumes to be it will never seem to be enough; weakness will always prevail because they are “too frightened to be cowards” (24). In looking at all works of literature from…

War can do many horrible things to its soldiers, but it can also save them from themselves. All Quiet on the Western Front written by Erich Maria Remarque is a testament of Paul Bäumer. He and seven classmates enlist in World War I. They experience and witness unspeakable violence becoming soldiers. More violence than anyone should ever see. It corrupts most of the soldier’s minds because of the trauma that they have faced. Although war dehumanized many of the young men, war in many ways made Paul Bäumer more human.…

All Quiet on the Western Front was a story of a group of young children, nineteen years old or so, who enlisted in the military on the advice of one of their professors. They were told, and believed, that they would be seen as heroes in everyone’s eyes, and that they were doing such great things for their country and showing extreme nationalism and patriotism. As the months went on, fighting on the front lines, these men realized that this life was nothing like what they were told the military life would be. They were promised fame. This was not the case and through their time in the trenches these men were stripped of their humanity, grew to hate their commanding officers, and were fighting purely for survival to see another day.…

As Paul progresses through war, his skin becomes thick, he begins to look more and more like a leader. He treats new comrades with respect and encouragement. After surviving an enemy bombardment, Paul attempts to comfort a startled newbie. (P.60) “That’s no disgrace ... Many’s the man before you has had his pants full after the first bombardment. Go behind that tree and take your underpants off.” Paul treats the frightened soldier as a friend and tells him everything is alright, he even tells him to take his dirty pants off so the rest of his embarrassing experience is somewhat bearable. Paul has been in this boy’s shoes before, Paul speaks from his heart, and he knows exactly what to say to make the soldier not feel out of place. He makes such an effort to comfort this boy because he wish’s someone had treated and cared for him as he is doing now. He understands how crappy war can be at such a young age and doesn’t want it to be as tough as it was for him. Another scene where Paul takes charge and plays a companion role is when he is trying to save his fellow squad member from the enemy gas. “I swipe at him with the satchel, he doesn’t see—once again,—once again… I reach the man, his satchel on the side nearest me, I seize the mask, pull it over his head, he understands now” (P.65). Paul risks his life by standing in…

After Paul is sent back to the front, he has to crawl through No-Man's-Land, an attack begins, he becomes lost, crawls into a hole to play dead, and stabs a French soldier who falls into the hole. This shows how Paul and others during the war are changing from the civilized people they were into savage animals. Paul doesn't even think when he stabs the man, he just strikes madly at home (9.216) like a bear whose territory has been invaded, but it isn't just Paul. If the situation was reversed, the Frenchman would have killed Paul the same way, not thinking, but letting a primitive instinct take control. The war has stripped people of everything, making that primitive instinct come out. It is almost like Paul is possessed, not fully in control of his actions. This war is like a dogfight, innocent dogs fighting with only the high ups profiting. But Paul realizes “that your mothers are just as anxious as ours, and that we have the same fear of death, and the same dying and the same agony”. Paul even asks for forgiveness “Forgive me, comrade; how could you be my enemy?” (223). He is remorseful as “I [he] did not want to kill you[Frenchman]. . . . But you were only an idea to me before, an abstraction that lived in my mind and called forth its appropriate response” (223). This gives hope, that not all humanity is…

    Army Values-Integrity

Integrity is one of the most talked about and most abused of the Seven Army Values. First we must define integrity it is doing the right thing consistently. That means that we must do the legally and morally correct thing every time. Just because something is hard or unpleasant does not mean that we can look the other way. Doing the right thing is not a matter of deciding do I help my fellow soldier and let him slide on an Army regulation or do I uphold the regulation. It means doing both they are both equally important. Sometimes helping a soldier means that you must enforce the regulations and in some cases that can mean discharging them from the Army at other times it means fighting for the soldier and getting them the help that they need to succeed in the Army.…
