This is a true story about the life in Rwanda during the spring of 1994. It is about Paul Rusesabagina who saved a lot of lives. He was the hotel manager of Hôtel des Mille Collines where he housed over a thousand Tutsi refugees when the Hutus killed all the Tutsis on their way. Hutu extremists within Rwanda's political elite blamed the entire Tutsi minority population for the country's economic and political problems. The Tutsis were called cockroaches on the radio by the Interahamwe militia, that consists of Hutu extremists who planned to destroy the entire Tutsi civilian population. Tutsi and people suspected of being Tutsi were killed. Paul himself is a Hutu, but his women is Tutsi. What touches me the most is that even though Paul is a Hutu and he could be safe, he still risked his life to safe the life of others. He saved both Tutsi and moderate Hutu refugees. The Tutsi’s couldn’t really defend themselves, because they were in a big minority in Rwanda. Around 85% was Hutu and only 14% were Tutsi. I think it is good that they made a movie about this, so that people all over the world can see what happened there. Because this genocide has happened in Africa a lot of people don’t think that much of this genocide than the genocide of the Jewesh by the Nazi’s. Though there were about 1 million Tutsis killed within 100 days. Because of the chaotic situation there is not an exact number of people killed and unline the genocides carried out by the Nazi’s, authorities made no attempts to record deaths. You could also see in the movie that there was a lot of corruption between politicians. There was one employee in the hotel who was Hutu and gave information to the Hutu militia.
