believes in. During his notorious affair, Tory showed what kinds of things were really in his heart, He felt like it was okay for him to go into another woman's house and lay in bed with her. He felt this way because the womb that he was having the affair with made him happy. Rose asked him to stop but he replied with, “Rose, I can’t give that up” (69). Troy was inflamed when Rose tried to explain how she felt. This show just how insensitive Troy can really become. When Troy shows his love towards his wife, he does it indirectly. He tells others how much he loves her like his best friend Bono, “…there’s a woman out there for me somewhere…Looked there. saw Rose and latched onto her” (6). Tory does love his wife, but it is hard to believe after he unapologetically abused he heart and didn't do anything to fix it. It would make since for someone who loves someone else so much would do anything to not hurt them. If the did they would break their back to fix it. Troy Really shows his sympathy when he finds out that his child's mother passed away. He thinks of all the things that may happen to his daughter and him: “ And right now your daddy’s scared cause we sitting out here and ain’t got no home” (79). Tory feels this way because he really sees the innocence in his daughter. He knows that his daughter can not do anything about what is going on. While he is pandering in his own sorrow, he may be reflecting way that thighs could have gone better. Tory shows his love toward his children sub-continuously as well. Lyons has always had the dream of being into the music industry. Though Lyons work his hardest it was never good enough to get his fathers approval. Lyons came to Tory house and he asked him if he wanted to hear him play Jazz. Troy decided and called it "Chinese music”, “I don't like all that Chinese music. All that noise” (48). He did this because he did not understand the quality and the true depth of what Jazz really is. This shows how Tory and Lyons have not and much in common: "You and me is two different people, Pop ”(18). Though Tory was talking about how bad he didn't agree with his sons talent, he is still happy for his son. He can be his own person and his own man. He is happy that his son is able to do what he loves. Tory feels like he will never be able to do that. Cory was the son of his most current wife.
He raised Cory up to be a better man than he was himself. He didn't want Cory to make the same mistakes that he made in his young years. Tory is hard on his son because Cory can be defiant at times: “The boy lied to me. I told the n***** if he wanna play football…” (57). Troy declined to Cory’s football carrier idea. When they negotiated on it, Tory made it nearly impossible to keep up with. This made Cory feel like his father didn't like him: “How come you ain’t never liked me?” (37). When Troy didn't feel sorry about it, it made it seem to Cory that his father did not sympathize him. The main reason why Tory doesn't want Cory to play foot ball is because he doesn't want him to end up like him. Troy thought that he was going to go and be the best player in the Negro Leagues. He doest’ want Cory to get all of his hopes up and get far and it all fall in his face. Tory shows that he really does care for his son when he said, “You go on and get your book-learning so you can work yourself up in that A&P or learn how to fix cars or build houses or something, get you a trade. That way you have something can't nobody take away from you” (38). This shows how Tory really does love and symbolize his son. He cares enough for his son that he is wiling to give him guidance so he wont make the same mistakes he did. Cory only sees the outside of things. He only see the hateful part about it. He does not see the depth of what his father it really trying to teach
him. Despite all of ruff and mean outside troy has, he still has a affectionate side. Tory appears to be a means and a greedy man. When he tells his family things, his loving ways are shown. Anyone who would go thought the trouble of trying to help get someone elves life totter or would go homeless for a little girl had love in their heart. It might not be intentioned, but is surely there.
