Personal and Professional Background & Formative Experiences Jeanne Shaheen was born in St. Charles Missouri on January 28, 1947. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from Shippensburg College in 1969 and attained her masters in political science from the University of Mississippi in 1973.1 Afterwards, she moved to New Hampshire where she taught a school and ran a small business with her husband. Soon thereafter in 1980, Shaheen began her political career as a campaign manager were she worked for the former President Jimmy Carter in the New Hampshire primary.2 She also campaigned for Gary Hart in the New Hampshire primary of 1984 and for Paul McEachon for governor of New Hampshire in 1986 and 1988.3 With the knowledge of how to run a successful campaign, Shaheen decided to pursue her own political goals by running for the state legislature, where she served three terms. In 1996, Shaheen, with six years of experience from the New Hampshire Senate, decided to run for governor. Despite a democratic senator not having been elected since 1980, Shaheen overcame all obstacles and became the first female governor of New Hampshire.
