Part Two: the Question of Origin: God has created all things (Gen. 1:1). “God is the first cause” (Weider & Gutierrez, 2011, p. 56) in creation, meaning He initiated the Ex Nihilo process of creation. Standing proudly as two of the great pillars of world literature, particularly ancient world literature, the Book of Genesis and the Epic of Gilgamesh provide a great deal of insight into the nature of early human-animal relationships. In particular, the documentary hypothesis, which persuasively postulates that the Pentateuch is comprised of the writings of four different sources, means that the place and date of authorship of parts within the text (e.g. Genesis 1 and Genesis 2) vary significantly from each other. That said, it is a safe estimate that Genesis 1, which was written by the Priestly source, was composed in approximately 500 BCE by Jewish priests exiled in Babylon (Encyclopedia Britannica). Likewise, Genesis 2, written by the Yahwistic source, dates to around 950 BCE and was produced in Judaea (Encyclopedia…

While the Sumerians wrote Gilgamesh as early as 3000 B.C., there is much controversy surrounding the time the Bible, mainly the Old Testament was written (Loery). Strangely, these two books have similar accounts of very meaningful events and symbols in today’s society, yet one is a myth and the other is the basis of many different religions. The similarities between parallel stories in Gilgamesh and The Bible make it hard to believe that one work did not influence the other.…

This assignment really allowed me to examine those around me and their varying beliefs about creation. I was shocked to discover that people so close to me actually believe in evolution and the big bang theory. I consider it a privilege to have opened up this door to conversation with people I never even considered. The course has prepared me to apologetically defend and explain the creation account and the gospel. Please be in prayer with me as the Lord wants to use me to speak truth to my neighbor. Through the course of this paper I will detail the answers of my interviewees from a survey with many vital framework questions concerning origin. For the survey I interviewed my mother, father, and next door neighbor.…

“It is a primordial mystery that has engaged human imagination from the down time: Who are we? Where did we come from? What is our ultimate destiny? The story of creation—whether told through the imagery of ancient myth; the revelations of scared tradition or the theories of modern physics and biology – is the story of what it means to be a human. And it is a story over which religion and science have been fighting for centuries. Since Copernicus overturned the church-sanctioned view of the Earth as the center of the universe and Charles Darwin posited random mutation and natural selection as the real creators of human life, the biblical view that ‘In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth’ has found itself under increasing attack in modern Western thought” (Sheler, 1991, par. 1).…
