How Neil Armstrong Made History
Neil Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, on August 5, 1930. Neil Armstrong made history on July 20, 1969, by becoming the first man to walk on the moon. He joined the astronaut program in 1962 and in 1965 was assigned to the Gemini 8 program as the command Pilot. He was involved in the Gemini 8, Gemini 11, and Apollo 8 missions before becoming commander of Apollo 11 that would take him to the moon. After landing on the moon he announced to Mission Control "Houston Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." Shortly after the Apollo 11 he announced that he did not plan to fly in space again.
