The Ancient Olympics were a lot different from Olympics now. During the 5-day version of the Olympics, on the first day contenders took an oath and made offerings to the Greek gods. The events that day were running, wrestling, and boxing for boys. The second started with a procession to the Hippodrome or the racing arena. Then came the chariot races and the horse races. In June of 1896, the first modern Games were held in Athens for a span of ten days. It was relatively small. But because of the big audiences that were attracted, the first modern Olympics were a success. 1916, 1940, and 1944 never took place because of World War II. Compared to the ancient Games, the modern Olympics have less violence, no fixed location, and no correlation with religion. It is international and has more events, and there were no Winter Olympics in ancient times. There is also recognition of second and third place winners, with medals instead of wreaths. However, there is still a torch ceremony and oath, and the overall concept of competition also has not
