How Race In America's Classrooms Affects Achievement
In “Connecting the Dots: How Race in America’s Classrooms Affects Achievement” Tatum does a good run through in explaining the historical measure of intelligence among white and people of color. One of the most shocking facts presented in her speech is that African American and Hispanic students enter colleges and universities with the same level of interest as their White and Asian counterparts in STEM fields, but don’t persist at the same rates of interest. Only 13% of pursuing students in STEM fields are awarded to African Americans and Hispanics. According to Tatum, some of the barriers African American and Hispanic students face in pursuing their education include family education background, low socioeconomic status and high school achievement.

    By using tests, Terman and Jordan convinced many schools “to place slow students into special classes, rigid academic tracks, or entirely separate schools” (Stoskopf). Here, smart students were in one school and the people who do not meet a certain standard on a standardized test go to a different one. Even though Terman and Jordan did not explain the two school's differences thoroughly, the “smart” school probably has better resources and teachers than the “unintelligent” school. This is outrageous because Terman and Jordan’s actions are the same as what white people did to people of color, which is racism, a belief that should be abolished. They treated them unfairly because the whites thought the other races did not have as many abilities as their own. Even if racism was accepted, it is unfair to some students because the tests might not contain a person’s academic strength. Additionally, PAUSD's mission statement, it states, “we allow ALL students to acquire educational and social competencies…”, but Terman and Jordan did the exact opposite, therefore, two prominent figures in Palo Alto have to be banished, or else the mission statement would be invalid (District, Palo Alto Unified School). Besides separating the students, Terman and Jordan claimed that African-Americans, Native-Americans, and Latino children “cannot master abstractions that can often be made into efficient workers” (Terman 92). In other words, the two eugenicists believe that the three races listed above are too ignorant to work in the real world because they cannot learn challenging concepts.     This myth of cultural deficiency lead to a belief that African American culture is deficient because African Americans are intellectual deficient.     Referring to the court case Fisher v. University of Texas, Jason L. Riley—in his article, “Scalia Was Right About Race Preferences”—mentions evidence brought to light by a Justice involved in the case. Riley states, “racial preferences can handicap some black students by placing them in elite schools where they don’t have the same credentials of the average student and struggle academically” (Riley 1). Due to the fact that the aforementioned students were admitted because of their race—rather than their merit and prior education—they find the higher-level academics extremely challenging. The students are wholly unprepared for the work ahead of them, due to their relatively limited primary education, when compared with the education of their more privileged peers. Further evidence of this disparity between the education of students admitted under affirmative action, and students who were not, is displayed in Martin Trow’s paper, “Preferential Admissions in Higher Education”.     Are Black Americans Dumber than White Americans? Can it unequivocally be stated that European Americans hold more intelligence then African Americans? Are African Americans genetically wired to have a lesser mental capacity then European Americans? For a long time this was the explanation to a burning problem. African Americans score lower than White Americans on vocabulary, reading, and mathematics tests, as well as on tests that claim to measure scholastic aptitude and intelligence. “This gap appears before children enter kindergarten and it persists into adulthood. The typical American black still scores below 75 percent of American whites on most standardized tests. On some tests the typical American black scores below more than 85 percent of whites.” (CHRISTOPHER, JENCKS) This test score gap is not an inevitable fact of nature. It is true that the gap shrinks only a little when black and white children attend the same schools. It is also true that the gap shrinks only a little when black and white families have the same amount of schooling, the same income, and the same wealth. However, after extensive research, no one has found any evidence saying that blacks have less intellectual ability than whites. So what causes this gap in test scores? Some attribute it to the culture of African Americans. They say that African Americans are uninterested in learning and don’t seek to pursue academic excellence. Some attribute the gap to testing conditions. Some attribute it to concepts such as “White Guilt” and “Stereotype Threat.”(Will be explained later) I however cannot attribute it to any one thing.
