Although I played all three sports, basketball in particular has impacted me the most. Basketball has taught me how to be disciplined. To be an exceptional player in basketball, you have to have some level of discipline. Being disciplined is just doing what you are supposed to do. That goes hand in hand with on and off court activities.
Throughout my life, I have seen many great basketball players with a God given ability and go nowhere with it. The reason those great players went nowhere is because they had poor leadership skills. I never realized how much responsibility a leader has until this year when I became a captain. As a captain, I had to demonstrate leadership in many different ways. Life is not fair. Life will throw many challenges at everyone. Some challenges may be small. Other challenges may be too overwhelming for one person to handle. In basketball, the absolute toughest challenge is performing well in clutch moments. Whether it is getting a stop a defense or scoring the game tying three pointer, that is the toughest challenge. It is because of the pressure. Those moments are so intense, it can be overwhelming for just the normal person. But others thrive in those moments.
