In 1953, the original idea of creating a Walk of Fame was born into E.M. Stuarts head. He was a volunteer president for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and thought The Walk would be a significant addition to Hollywood. After a committee was assembled to begin the creation process, a prototype or preview star had to be made to get a feel of what they wanted to transmit to the public. They decided to use a caricature (an exaggerated way of drawing an image) in 1956, but that idea was later redrafted into the design of a five- pointed terrazzo and brass star that contained the name and category of the honoree. In 1957, the first 1,558 honorees were selected to be inserted into The Walk of Fame ground. In 1958, construction of the walk began, but was delayed due to two lawsuits they had been given. “The lawsuit, filed by Charles Champlin, Jr., sought damages for the exclusion of his father, whose nomination had been withdrawn due to pressure from multiple quarters” (http://articles.latimes.com). First, they must be nominated. It can either be by their own company, or a fan. The celebrity must be famous for at least five years to even be eligible for a star. Next, their nominator must send in a recommendation/nomination letter to the Chamber of Commerce explaining why that celebrity should earn a star. The celebrity themself then must write a response stating that they definitely agree to receiving a star. Then, the Chamber of Commerce will discuss if they should grant that specific celebrity a star or not. Next, the celebrity must come up with $30,000 that will be used to make a star for The Walk, a star for the celebrity to take home, and to pay security/decorations used for the ceremony.
