Dr. Barnes had an explicit will documenting what he wanted to happen to his art collection. Barnes’ will stated that his goal was to keep the Barnes Foundation as a freestanding educational institution. He did not want it to be turned into an art museum and he wanted the collection to stay in the building that he had for it. It should also be preserved as an educational institution that opened to educators and students. The arts itself should not be sold or loaned. Lastly, a democratic nature should be preserved at all times in the institution. After his passing, the foundation was run by Violette de Mazia who followed his exact wishes. After 30 years of running the institution exactly how Dr. Barnes wanted it, de Mazia passed away and it was left to question who would be the next to run the foundation.
